I jumped at the chance to try the new flavors of Diet Coke because I love a good soda with a new and different flavor. Some of these have definitely interested me, and so I made my friend Laura do a taste test with me. We tried five flavors–Ginger Lime, Zesty Blood Orange, Feisty Cherry, Strawberry Guava and Blueberry Acai.

Ginger Lime

Hailey: When I first smelled this, I definitely got a whiff of lime. I thought it was a really good blend of the lime and ginger flavors, and I could definitely taste both. It’s super refreshing, and it compliments the taste of Coke super well.

Laura: I want to be sitting on a beach while I drink this. It smoothly goes over your tongue, and it felt like I was drinking limeade rather than something carbonated.

Zesty Blood Orange

Hailey: I first thought it smelled like Fresca. When I first tried it, I couldn’t believe how orange-y it was. It’s interesting how none of the flavors change the underlying flavor of Coke, but they add to it in interesting and different ways.

Laura: This punches you with orange, but it’s good. If you paired this with lemonade, I think that would be good too. I actually like this one.

Fiesty Cherry

Hailey: I love Cherry Coke, so I was super excited for this flavor. However, I expected more of a cherry flavor. It’s less sweet than cherry coke, but some people would probably like that.

Laura: I don’t always like Coke, but this was pretty good. My taste buds are split in half from Coke and cherry-flavor. I kind of like it! It sort of tastes like Dr. Pepper, which I love as well.

Strawberry Guava

Hailey: I thought it smelled really good. I got a lot of strawberry, but not so much Coke. I also thought it was pretty sweet. I love the flavor, but it’s less refreshing and more dessert-y.

Laura: It has a super strong strawberry flavor. It tastes like a fruit roll up and smells like strawberry gum.

Blueberry Acai

Hailey: This smelled just like a blueberry muffin. We were both super nervous to try this one, but I actually really liked it. It was tart, but the flavors blended together as well as in Cherry Coke.

Laura: I thought this was good at first, but it was definitely sweet. It would be a good “dessert” for someone who wanted to choose a soda as their sweet treat for the day.

Here are our personal rankings (which we decided to hide from each other until the end):

Hailey: Lime>Orange>Blueberry>Strawberry>Cherry

Laura: Cherry>Lime>Strawberry>Blueberry>Orange

We definitely had some trouble figuring out our own personal rankings because the sodas are so different. It depends on taste and what you’re in the mood for. As you can see, Laura’s favorite was my least favorite comparatively, and my second-favorite (and I was pretty close to placing it in first) was her least favorite. The sodas are very different, so they were difficult to place in a personal favorite order.

Here are our official recommendations based on the differences:

  • If you aren’t necessarily a Coke person, go for Cherry. It’s a good middle-of-the road flavor and a total classic.

  • If you’re in the mood for something super refreshing, then go for the Ginger Lime. It’s a twist on a great flavor.

  • If you like citrus, then get the Blood Orange. It’s definitely citrus-forward, but it is a welcomed new flavor.

  • If you want something super sweet, then go for Strawberry Guava. It really goes for that strawberry flavor but has the refreshing counter of guava.

  • If you prefer your treat of the day to be soda, then we recommend the Blueberry Acai. It is very sweet, but has a nice tartness. (Plus it’s very on-trend).
