From Jerseys to Dresses: A Sooner Girl’s Guide to Tailgating Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oklahoma chapter.

College gamedays are no longer just for the guys. Each week, women at the University of Oklahoma step out in their best for football gamedays. Nowadays, there are countless ways to show your Sooner spirit when roaming the tailgates on any given Saturday. Here is a review of some of the hottest looks and trends in crimson and cream:

If you’re feeling casual and sporty, go classic and throw on the jersey of your favorite Sooner player. Pair it with your beloved jean shorts for an effortless look like Senior Caroline Ward.  Opt for jeans instead of shorts as it gets cooler outside later this fall. Her twin sister, fashion-savvy Jillian Ward, went for a Do-It-Yourself approach to tailgating gear. She jazzed up her t-shirt from the school bookstore by cutting it at the collar for a retro, off-the-shoulder look.

Transforming too-large t-shirts into dresses is another popular way girls are altering their Oklahoma tees. Instead of wearing the traditional strapless t-shirt dress, more and more girls are opting for sleek and stylish red dresses, rompers, skirts, and pants.

A must-have accessory for tailgating attire is a pair of cowboy boots. The classic footwear is stylish and always in style for an Oklahoma girl. Senior Melanie Stone dresses up her boots with a fitted cream skirt and crimson tank top. By topping off her look with a pair of red feather earrings and an oversized brown belt, she has a look that she can wear for both day and night, while she attends the game and while celebrating a victory afterward.

Recent alumnae and tailgating veterans Amanda Mattox, Mandy Collins and Kristen Johnson rock their cowboy boots with their own individual styles: a loose, flowy, cream top with red shorts, a red and white striped shirt and jean shorts, and a sleeveless red dress are flawless looks. Pairing your outfit with a red handbag and matching accessories is a surefire way to look stylish and chic.

You can purchase similar items at Campus Corner or other stores around town. With places like Violet Avenue, Blush, Lucca, Savvy, Antique Garden, The Apothem and Balfour, you’re sure to find a stylish look no matter what your budget.  You can also make and create parts of your own outfit, which will make you the most fashionable Sooner gal in the stadium. Whether you’re feeling sporty or flirty, there are more than enough options to let you show your Sooner pride.
