At just 13 years old, Billie Eilish began releasing songs. Starting with the song her brother wrote, “Ocean Eyes,” Eilish gained some popularity, but since then her fan base has exploded.
Eilish released her first EP titled Don’t Smile at Me in 2017 when she was only 15 years old. The EP was recorded entirely in her brother’s bedroom. The EP was written by Eilish and her brother.
Eilish just released a new album in March titled WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?. The album is dark and at times, creepy. The music uses qualities that are usually associated with music used in horror movies along with depressing lyrics to create an eerie mood throughout the album.
Eilish also creates the concepts for her music videos herself, which complement her songs, adding to the lyrics and sound effects used in the songs. The song “when the party’s over” was written by her brother and Billie fell in love with it when she first heard it, said Eilish in a video posted on the NME YouTube channel.
In the same video, Eilish goes on to explain her inspiration behind the music video for the song. She explains that she was inspired by a drawing a fan gave her while she was on tour. The drawing was of Eilish with black ink dripping from her eyes, which is the imagery used in the music video.

When she came up with the idea for the video, she said she made a video for the director of her mom in their backyard sitting at a table, just like she wanted the video to be set up. She gave the director instructions of when to zoom in and gave him a frame for what she wanted in the video.
Unlike many artists, Eilish comes up with the concepts for her videos and knows exactly what she wants, which can be pretty challenging for a director.
Although Billie is young, she is changing the game for music. Her lyrics, vocals and visuals come together to create songs that are unlike any artist out there today. She, along with some help from her brother, is the mastermind behind the album. At just 17 years old, Eilish has become one of the biggest indie artists today.
