OSU athletics gains three new facilities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

The Sherman E. Smith Training Center is the first of several new up and coming facilities dedicated to OSU athletics to be completed.

The Smith Center, directly across from Boon Pickens Stadium on Hall of Fame Ave, offers a multitude of areas that can be used by various sports, such as football, baseball and soccer. The training center includes three designated outdoor practice areas and one indoor field.

This new advanced facility covers almost 94,000 feet, has six fabric roll-up doors, includes three filming platforms on the inside alone and more on the outside areas.

The training center is named after the late Sherman E. Smith, who passed away June 6, 2011. Smith had been a donor to OSU and his family gave $20 million for the building and upkeep of this indoor practice field.

OSU is also working on two more brand new facilities for the athletic department, the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center and a track and field complex. The Tennis Center will be located at the intersection of McElroy and Washington with the track and field complex nearby, just north of McElroy.

The new track and field complex will replace the Kaye Barrett Droke Track & Field Center that has been used since 1972. The Tennis Center will be 50,000 square feet and include six indoor courts with 12 more outside, coaches’ offices, locker rooms, a designated area for sports medicine and seating for a crowd of 350.
