Open Letter to Those Who Don’t Date Much

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

Open letter to those who don’t date much,

I know you get questions you are tired of answering and looks that make you feel uncomfortable. Way too often your family asks if you are still single or if you are seeing anyone. It’s hard to answer those kinds of questions.

It’s probably been a while since you’ve gone on a date, if ever, and that is 100% okay! You are not defined by anybody else. There is no rule that you have to be married before a specific age. Love can happen at any age! There is nothing wrong with you for not looking for a significant other in everyone you meet. That would be exhausting.

You may be told “dress nice wherever you go because you never know when you will meet the love of you life.” That is partly true. You never know who you will meet during any given day, but there is no reason you should dress up for other people. If you like to dress up, do it for yourself. If you don’t, then don’t.

I know it gets really annoying and uncomfortable when your family and friends start trying to set you up with people they know, but when that happens, you just have to take a play from the penguins in Madagascar and “just smile and wave.” Be nice, but firm on what you want. If you aren’t open to the idea of a set up, tell them no.

If you don’t want to date right now, or even if you don’t want to date ever, that is completely up to you! Don’t let anyone convince you to do something you don’t want to do or are uncomfortable with!

If anyone tries to tell you that you are weird or something is wrong with you because you aren’t actively looking for someone to spend the rest of you life with, tell them you are strong and independent. You do not have to validate to anyone wanting to spend time alone and bettering yourself or even simply not wanting a significant other. It is your body and your life. Do whatever you want.

Sincerely,

A Sympathizer
