Keeping It Safe Over Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

On the way to your destination….

Make sure getting an oil change and having the pressure of your tires checked are at the top of your to-do-list. This will prevent blowing a gasket (which I’ve done twice) and a tire blow out. Don’t forget to take turns behind the wheel and make sure the passenger in the front seat is doing their job and keeping you awake! Make sure drivers license for all passengers are present, as well as car registration and insurance.

Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn…

Always reserve a room that’s above the first floor. According to safespringbreak.org, first floor rooms are easier to break into, and rooms above the sixth floor are sometimes too high for ladders to each. Make sure all credit cards or personal info. is locked up and if safes are offered USE THEM! Keep doors and balconies locked and don’t let just anyone come into your room.

Money, Money, Money, Moneeeeey…

If you are going outside the United States make sure you have traveler’s checks. Need to use an ATM? Go to all ATM’s in groups in the daytime. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings and cover the keypad while entering your pin. If you feel unsafe or see someone sketchy hanging out, don’t hesitate to leave and go to another.

Everybody in the club gettin’ tipsy….

Know your limit. Not only for yourself, but for the ones around you. No one wants to baby sit their friend during their vacation. Be responsible and pace yourself. Be aware of alcohol poisoning and the possibility that drunkenness leads to easy targets for sex offenders. Many students report being intoxicated on a daily basis during spring break. Drinking and driving, its simple DON’T DO IT. If you need a way home call a cab.

On the beach…

If you’re drinking on the beach make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated. Sun can maximize the effects of alcohol, according to safespringbreak.org. Sunscreen with an SPF of 15, as well as hats and cover ups should be used for those with fair skin tones.

Swimming…

If you can’t swim, beware. I remember the first time I visited the beach in California. I ended up far out in the ocean away from the people I came with. It was scary! The tide tends to move people without them knowing. If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until it passes.

Girls night out…

I live by the buddy-buddy rule when going out. Never go alone. Especially, over spring break. Don’t set any drinks down and be aware of any symptoms and signs of wooziness or confusion. If this occurs tell a friend to take you to the nearest hospital or call 911.

Only for this one night…

Hooking up. Kudos to those of you who use protection, but for those who don’t may the gods be with you. Protect yourself. If you’ve never carried condoms before, but you’re planning on hooking up over spring break, now would be the time to invest. This avoids the whole “I don’t have any talk.” It’s also a good idea to make a personal list of what you are willing to do and not do on vacation.
