If you’re a little like me, you spent a good portion of your winter break catching up on the shows you’ve missed while studying for finals. And, if you’re even more like me, one of those shows was Bravo’s hit limited-series, Dirty John. Dirty John is based on the true story of Debra Newell, a Southern California interior designer, and her dangerous marriage with the mysterious John Meehan that ends in chaos. This story is wild from start to finish and always keeps you at the edge of your seat, wanting to know what’s next. My winter obsession is Dirty John and here’s why.

1. The story accurately followed the Podcast.

A podcast of the same name, hosted by investigative journalist Christopher Goffard, was how Debra got her story about John out into the world. In the podcast, Newell and her family, along with others whom John was at one point close to, recount their experience with John throughout the chaotic experiences they had with him. The podcast, like the show, kept me coming back for more.

2. The cast was perfect.

Bravo could not have picked a better cast for this series, with Connie Britton starring as Debra Newell and Eric Bana as the infamous John Meehan. The chemistry between the two during the show was unbelievably enticing—so much so, I had to constantly remind myself they aren’t together in real life. Not to mention, the acting was perfect from all characters, from Julia Gardner as Terra to Jean Smart as Arlane Hart. The acting was raw and had me falling for all of the twists and turns.

3. It’s adapted by Bravo.

Call me biased, but I’m a sucker for almost anything by Bravo, especially when it comes to the Real Housewives franchise. So when I saw a mysterious show like Dirty John being advertised, I knew I needed to see it, and I’m glad I did. The sexy music, coupled with beautiful scenery, great actors and a thrilling plot, not only screamed Bravo but added to the perfection of the show.

4. It taught me some valuable life lessons.

The first, of course, to be wary of whomever you meet online. As easy as that sounds, you innately want to think everyone is a genuine person with good intentions. Watching this show (and, granted, some seeing other shows and hearing other stories) has successfully shown me not to completely trust the first person who is willing to listen. I’ve also learned not to share any valuables, like money or belongings, with anyone. Debra’s genuine mistake in quickly getting a joint bank account with John is one of the reasons the relationship spiraled out of control. Until I know someone is worthy, he isn’t getting any of my earnings. But, my favorite lesson I learned from watching the show, your family will always be by your side and willing to help no matter what issue you’re found in. Debra’s children were ready to protect their mother, and seeing how much they loved her was heartwarming. So much so, I called my mom immediately after the finale to remind her I love her too. Thanks for the lessons, Bravo!
