This weeks Campus Celebrity is Oscar Veliz! Oscar is sophomore from Plano, Texas where he attended high school, Plano East Senior High. He is an Industrial Engineering and Management major, with plans of moving back to Texas after he graduates from Oklahoma State.
Oscar is in Omega Delta Phi fraternity, and he is currently the Prospective Member Educator and next in line to be ODPhi’s President in the Spring of 2017. Once he becomes President, Oscar said he will focus on diversifying the group and immersing them into the community more. His main goal while holding the position will be to host a TREE Conference at OSU. The TREE Conference is the largest Latino education conference in Oklahoma and focuses on teaching high school students about their options after graduating.
ODPhi will be hosting an Easter Eggstravaganza this month, and hope to do more community service in the near future.
Oscar is also acting Secretary for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. He hopes to one be President of SHPE, and lead the organization to expanding thier horizons with not only members, but projects as well.
Oscar has had to overcome many obstacles since coming to OSU such as being away from home and learning how to adjust his time-management with every new project.
“Not everyone will believe in you,” Oscar said. “People will doubt you, but you just have to prove them wrong.”
Oscar said he looks up to his Mom for inspiration because she’s hardworking and independent. He admires her for always sacrificing her time for her kids.
Oscar loves listening to music, especially Kanye West. In his free time, he likes to work out and hang out with his friends. Oscars favorite colors are scarlet and silver. He loves watching Pulp Fiction, and his favorite animal in the entire world, is a cat.
Whether Oscar is leading the pack or taking a break to listen to his favorite music, we see bright things in his future!
