At some point we have all had a crush on one of our guy friends, whether it has worked out or not. So the question remains, how to make the relationship into something more without ruining the friendship. The main thing is how to get them from just friends to boyfriend. I know from experience. After talking to my boyfriend, who was my friend for four years before more developed, this is what we came up with.

  1. Persistence- Be persistent, not aggressive. Show little subtle signs of flirting, but don’t be over whelming. For example I showed interest by going to his flag football games.
  2. Keep your options open- Don’t throw all your eggs in one basket. Make sure that he realizes that he is not the only option, but the option that you want most.
  3. Don’t expect him to read between the lines- Be upfront and honest about your feelings. It may be tough and getting rejected is always a possibility, but if the guy is worth it then take the risk.
  4. Make plans to hangout- Occasionally try to have plans with just the two of you. Show him what he is missing out on. Even if it is just as simple as a study date or lunch on campus, make time for him.
  5. Patience- This is the big one. It took me trying and waiting two years before we became a couple. Everyone has heard the saying, “good things come to those who wait.” After waiting two years I can say the wait was worth it.

All relationships take time and effort. Sometimes they are scary, but that is the fun in new relationships. Even if it doesn’t work out the way you wanted at least you know you tried. Sometimes the best relationships start with friendships. You already have a good understanding of what the person is like and mutual trust.  Some wise words, “a guy and a girl can be just friends, but at one point or another one of them will fall for the other, maybe temporarily, maybe at the wrong time, maybe too late or maybe, just maybe …forever”, there is nothing more true than that.
