Pop Wise: Why You’ll Love Pitch Perfect

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

From the moment I saw the Pitch Perfect trailer over the summer, I was hooked. A movie following wayward college gals who try to beat the odds by winning a national a cappella singing championship. What could make for a better girl-power comedy? So naturally when OU Movie Zone hooked up Her Campus Ohio U with prescreen passes for the movie, my life was made. After finally seeing it, the movie’s definitely everything I expected and more. Here’s what you can look forward to when Pitch Perfect hits theaters Oct. 5:

Unexpected scene-stealers
Rebel Wilson more than proved her comedic genius as Kristen Wiig’s outrageous roommate in Bridesmaids. So it’s no surprise she brought the same level of awkward humor to her Pitch Perfect character Fat Amy. While she certainly stole the movie with her crazy one-liners, it’s the supporting cast you need to watch out for. Particularly, the soft-spoken Asian Lily (Hana Mae Lee), whose creepy and unexpected lines are enough to scare you and make you laugh at the same time.

Mind-blowing mash-ups
For those of you unfamiliar with a cappella groups, they’re pretty much the equivalent of Glee’s New Directions on steroids. There’s nothing more exciting than hearing a blend of voices come together to remix your favorite tunes–with no instruments I might add. This movie had plenty of killer harmonies, song mixes and singers to go along with them. The Riff Off mash-up (seen in the trailer) pairing The Barden Bellas against rival all-guy group the Treblemakers highlights the amazing awesomeness that comes from spontaneous a cappella singing.

New guy crush
You won’t be able to resist the adorable Skylar Astin, who plays Jesse, the newest hottie to join the Treblemakers and the guy that vies for the heart of new-girl Beca, played by Anna Kendrick. Not only does his voice make your heart melt, but his character is also so sweet and funny you can’t help but smile every time he’s on screen. After seeing this movie, he’ll make you want to pick up a choir nerd of your own!

Feel-good message
Watching the pure friendship that unfolds between this group of misfit girls is the greatest thing about Pitch Perfect. Despite all being completely different from one another, the girls help redefine what it means to be a true Bella. No matter whether you’re fat, a lesbian, sex maniac, ethnic or just a little bit alternative, each member’s individual quirks are accepted and celebrated. In the Bellas’ struggle to claim a cappella glory, the one thing that ultimately matters most is friendship.
