I remember that fateful day last October, just wasting time on Twitter, when suddenly Royal Engagement was the top trending topic. I was happy to find that Prince William had proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Kate Middleton. At the time all I thought was “Wow, lucky girl. Landing the living Prince Charming in college?” Then I clicked away and promptly forgot about the engagement; mostly in an effort to ignore the fact that I have still yet to find a Prince on the Ohio University campus.
Somewhere in the royal hustle and bustle, I forgot one major aspect of this wedding. The one thing that sparked my royal obsession: this is Princess Diana’s son!I’ve been in love with all things English since I was a little girl, but Princess Diana started it all. I was lucky enough to see the touring exhibition of her clothes (including the famous wedding gown) a few years ago when it came to Dayton. You have no idea just how spectacular that gown is until you see it in person.
Princess Di was the people’s princess, which means little to Americans, but is kind of a big deal. Her AIDS efforts and numerous other charities impacted millions. Her grace and style influences designers and fashionistas still today. Her wedding to Prince Charles set records, including the longest train on a wedding gown and highest television viewing audience. After her tragic death, her sons have strived to live up to their mother’s heroic life. In an effort to keep Diana in the wedding, William gave his bride-to-be his mother’s sapphire engagement ring. The upcoming wedding will set new records and has already caused a mass hysteria around the globe.
After realizing the spectacular event that would occur on April 29, 2011, I began to scour the web for every royal tidbit. This is the wedding of the century, and I want to remember every detail. So, I bought up every royal wedding magazine, bookmarked the official wedding website, and even bought my own replica of the famous sapphire ring.
One could say that I’ve gone just a little royally mad. Especially, considering I plan on getting up at 1 AM to watch the Live Streaming on BBCAmerica and E!News. Be sure to come back here after the wedding for my reactions and timeline of the 24-hour coverage!
