Womxn’s Climb Night reserves time for Ohio University’s women and non-binary students at Ping Recreation Center’s climbing wall. The event was created by OHIO’s Outdoor Pursuits program.
“It’s a very supportive environment for women who have little-to-no experience and it’s a great opportunity to make new friends,” said OHIO sophomore Anna Petroff.
Womxn’s Climb Night alternates weekly between Tuesdays from 7-10 p.m. and Thursdays from 5-10 p.m. The climbing wall is located on the first floor of Ping Recreation Center past the front desk. Shoes and harnesses are available for students to rent for free.
“Our goal is to create a safe space and welcoming community for experienced and inexperienced womxn climbers. This will include: staffing the wall with womxn identifying employees and only allowing womxn identifying climbers during the event,” said OHIO Outdoor Pursuits in an Instagram post advertising the event.
Womxn’s Climb Night is just one of several events offered through Outdoor Pursuits. The program offers various other free climbing clinics for all skill levels, such as belay clinics and lead climb nights.
Belay clinics teach beginners the basic foundations of how to use belay devices and belay safely while climbing. To attend a belay clinic, OHIO students must register through RecShop or in person at the Ping Member Services desk.
Lead Climb Nights are offered to OHIO students who are already certified in belaying. Lead climbing is a climbing technique where one guides and secures, or leads, their rope attached to their climbing route. Lead Climb Nights are held weekly alternating between Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-10 p.m. with no registration required. The climbing wall is open from 3-10 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 4-7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
