Karen Peters is an internship and student services specialist. She works for the Scripps College of Communication as a staff member of the Harris Student Support Center area and her focus is on providing internship opportunities for the students and to support the five schools internship coordinators.
On a day-to-day basis, Karen works closely with the five schools in Scripps (communication studies, journalism, media arts and studies, visual communication and information and telecommunication systems) on internship related activities. She assists their students addressing questions and providing guidance on a wide variety of topics–resume review, financial aid, how to find an internship and job search any scholarships. In addition, she works closely with the Career Leadership and Development Center to provide additional, career related activities to the students. She is continuously reaching out to employers/alums tied to internships and high profile relationships such as Miss Universe, TODAY show and Ohio Department of Public Safety. She coordinates onsite interview days with several employers along with coordinating a mock interview day for seniors. She doesn’t stop there– she also coordinates a bi-weekly Internship, job and announcements newsletter.
Her job has has impacted her life in a positive way. Karen’s role is an extremely rewarding opportunity to assist students with finding “experiential learning opportunities” to blend with their formal education to prepare them for the workforce. Working with students and building relationships is her favorite part of working at Ohio University. The enjoyment of working with students, problem solving and education has led Karen to work at Ohio University. Her background is a combination of 25 years in business and industry taking a pivot working into education. Her business background has helped tremendously in her role.
Karen enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking and reading. She is also a gardening and herb enthusiast. Being surrounded in an education center full of talented faculty and staff, interesting research and activities is her favorite part about Ohio University. She is always learning something new. The beautiful campus is a wonderful bonus.
