I Surprised My Best Friend For Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

Meaghan is my best friend. She currently goes to college in upstate New York and her family resides in Florida. This is a timeline diary of everything that happened in planning to surprise her during our spring break.

January 4, 2019

I messaged one of Meaghan’s friends on Instagram, explaining what I was doing and that I needed her mom’s phone number to coordinate days and to make sure it was okay that I came down to Florida. Of course, it was okay. Meaghan and I have had a rough few months and it would be nice for both of us to have this time to relax and be together.

Meaghan’s mom texted me saying they bought her plane ticket home. This meant that it was my turn to find plane tickets. I found plane tickets for a flight on the same day so organizing this would be very interesting. I decided to stay in Florida for 7 days.

I texted Meaghan’s mom asking when she would be landing in Florida. Meaghan would land at 2:00 p.m. and I land at 3:20 p.m. Meaghan’s parents were going to take her out to grab some food and then come back to the airport to pick me up. Their reasoning – they told her – to go back to the airport, is to pick up a “missionary” (me).

February 4 was Meaghan’s birthday. I wished her a happy birthday and told her that I sent her a present, but she won’t get it until she gets home in Florida for spring break.

Meaghan and I were on FaceTime for a few hours and she was asking questions about spring break. The whole plan slipped out. Meaghan now knew I was coming to Florida. Meaghan and I planning everything out. We would be going to the beach, Disney World, and would be getting the tattoos that we had talked about getting together for a long time. We were both so excited. Only a few more days remained until I flew down to Florida!

I had been in Florida for five days now. It was so nice to see my best friend. Since we live so far away from each other, we miss each other a lot; especially when things get bumpy in our lives. During the trip, we went to the pool, went to Tampa to explore, started a new Netflix show, and confirmed we would be getting tattoos before I leave.

By this point, I was sitting at the airport reflecting on my trip to Florida. Being so far away from your best friend can be difficult. When we see each other, it is even more meaningful and we make the most of the time we have together.

One of my goals this year was to spend more time with the people in my life and to allow others to come into my life. This had been a good trip, and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings.

Our tattoos say “no matter where” because no matter where we are in the world we are still best friends.

Abi is currently a sophomore at Ohio University. When she is not writing, she can be found working, binging shows on Netflix, or hanging out with her nephews.
