This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

The extended family starts to pile into Grandma’s house as you violently search for a place to hide until dinner is done. The nightmare begins when everyone is called to the table and questions start firing. Be prepared this year to (nicely) answer the unwanted and dreaded Turkey Day talk.

1. “OMG look at you! A little time in college makes a big change!”

What to say: “Hair dye does wonders! Thanks for noticing!”

2. “How’s school going for you?”

“It’s going well,” or your honest answer, but if you say something negative, expect follow up questions.

3. “Did you get good grades?”

Again, answer honestly. Flaunt your 4.0 or fluff up a number far below.

4. “Are you involved on campus?”

“Yes, I joined student government/ _____ sorority/Her Campus and I love it!” Or… “Not yet, but I’ve been looking for something that sparks my interest!”

5. “Are you dating anyone?”

This is the most dreaded question, so I suggest a simple yes or no, and then evacuate the premises.

6. “How are your roommates?”

As much as you’d like to complain about the obnoxious noise, unwanted boyfriend, and odd smells, politely explain that your living situation isn’t exactly the best, but hey, you’re alive.

7. “How’s *ex-best friend*/ *ex-boyfriend*/ *someone you never liked anyway*?”

As much as these words sound tempting, explain by saying, “You know, I’m not sure. I haven’t been in touch with them lately.” Problem solved.

Alright, Collegiettes! I hope you have a great Thanksgiving and that this will help you avoid the attitude that comes with answering unwanted Turkey Day questions! Gobble, gobble!
