To whom it may concern:

Please keep all Christmas celebrations to a minimum this year until December 1st.

Or at least after Thanksgiving.

The Great Christmas Debate- it’s a serious argument that needs to be stopped now. Now, I love Christmas just as much as everybody else who celebrates it… but I also love carbs. I find it repulsive that we totally skip over Thanksgiving as a whole and go right into celebrating and counting down to Christmas when we haven’t even had the chance to think about what we are truly grateful for.

In a perfect world, after Halloween, we would focus our attention on loved ones and things that we are thankful for and not just think about all the Christmas gifts we are about to receive.

The most precious thing about Thanksgiving is that we get to eat a big meal (maybe even two or three) with people that we truly care about. Big or small, there’s always at least one person we can share a meal with on this grateful day. One of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions is sitting around a large table with my family, enjoying a large home-cooked meal, and going around in a circle to share what we are most thankful for that year. Taking a moment to be thankful is extremely valuable because in this society, we tend to buy things as soon as we need them and we forget to reflect on some of the things that we cherish such as friendships, home security, educational opportunities, and of course our furry friends we might be able to see during the holidays. All of this cannot be celebrated when we walk into a Target, Walmart, or a mall and are SURROUNDED by Christmas music, lights, and Santa Claus himself!!

Christmas should be celebrated starting on December 1st. No exceptions. This allows us 25 FULL DAYS to sing Mariah Carey at the top of our lungs and string flashing lights in every empty space.

Please, please enjoy carb-loading, saying thanks, and shopping until you literally drop because there are too many pounds of mashed potatoes in your belly before you sit on Santa’s lap this year. I would truly appreciate it.

P.S. all holidays deserve a chance… okay?

To whom it may concern,

While I’m not necessarily arguing that we should be celebrating Christmas starting on November 1st, I definitely believe that we should be able to start our Christmas cheer early while celebrating Thanksgiving in harmony.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that is celebrated in many countries for different reasons. However, the origin of the celebration in the United States is a tad problematic. Americans forget what the Pilgrims did to the Native Americans who owned the land first, and schools continue to teach a false history. There’s more than just food, family, the parade (which Santa is in?), football, and Black Friday shopping that should be celebrated on this day, and we should be thankful all year long. And historians aren’t even 100% sure that turkey was even at the first Thanksgiving.

It’s hard to even understand how we could celebrate Thanksgiving the entire month of November. Unlike the buildup to Christmas, there isn’t really a buildup to Thanksgiving. There are even new studies that said decorating for Christmas earlier can make you happier. Psychotherapist Amy Molin explaining that Christmas decorations can take you back to a simpler time, at least mentally. “For many, putting up Christmas decorations early is a way for them to reconnect with their childhoods.” She also says that it can help those who have lost someone feel closer to their loved one, adding that, “decorating early may help them feel more connected with that individual.”

Lastly, it costs $0 to mind ya own business. If someone wants to decorate for Christmas November 1st or December 23rd, it shouldn’t concern you. If someone is listening to Christmas music all year long, it shouldn’t concern you. And if someone wants to indulge in Christmas movies, baking cookies, and drinking holiday drinks early, it shouldn’t concern you!!!! And if Santa is allowed to get ready for Christmas all year round, then I can get ready in November. JUST MIND YA BUSINESS.

P.S. Also how are you decorating for Thanksgiving? With some problematic Pilgrims and Native Americans? Some leaves? Your rotting carved pumpkin from Halloween? I’m just confused.
