Get Glowing While It’s Snowing!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

We have all been there. Whether hurrying to class or heading out for the night, we OU girls typically hibernate in our North Faces and from January to March. But who really wants to look like Kate Winslet’s character, Iris Simpkins, in 2006’s (And I mean, pre-California, pre-Jack Black, pre-fab lifestyle Kate Winslet). Yes, it was a perfect romantic comedy for passing the endless hours of winter break, but when 21 century girls think of sexy, we envision lustrous locks, a healthy complexion and a fit body – more like Jessica Alba in . Although you probably are not a scuba diving, treasure hunting, Latina, these beauty tips will help you de-winterize your face, skin and hair.

Skin
My favorite ways to get great skin are super basic. Most important: ALWAYS wash your face before bedtime! Nothing is worse for your complexion than sleeping with makeup on, especially in the winter. Renee Rouleau, founder of Renee Rouleau for Beautiful Skin and skincare blogger, recommends using a face scrub with salicylic acid nightly. The exfoliating beads with slough off that dead winter skin and the salicylic acid will treat and prevent blemishes. After washing, it’s important to moisturize. Anything unscented and formulated for the face should do the trick.   Now that you have a clean canvas, you can add makeup to get that coveted J-Lo glow. In the winter, I am a big fan of using bronzer and blush to avoid that Marilyn Manson-pallor. A natural rosy pink blush applied to the apples of your cheeks (stroke upward) and a bronzer with slight shimmer will give your skin vitality without looking like you overdosed on tanning a la Snooki.   http://www.reneerouleau.com/

Smooth, soft skin is simple. Eating healthy (think fruits, fish, and nuts) will keep your skin zit and wrinkle-free according to clinical nutritionists Samantha Heller and Ann Yelmokas McDermott. Using an exfoliating scrub in the shower will help keep dry, dead skin cells at bay. Moisturizing your entire body post-shower will soothe dry patches and itch.   If you simply can’t stand being pale, try a moisturizer with sunless tanner. To make your skin look super-sexy all over, hit the gym for some toning exercises that will eliminate cellulite and sag, not to mention boost your endorphins. And remember, endorphins make you happy and happy people just don’t kill their husbands.

Hair
Getting gorgeous hair is harder than radiant skin, in my opinion. We damage our hair daily with straighteners, curling irons and blow dryers. According to Nick Chavez, owner of Nick Chavez Beverly Hills Salon and hair expert for , it is important to reduce the use of these tools during winter. Hair retains less moisture from indoor heating, making it prone to breakage, dryness, static and the ultimate embarrassment: dandruff.   Lucky for you, loads of great hair products are available to treat winter hair. Unlucky for you, improving the quality of your hair is not an overnight process. So lay off the styling tools, use an anti-dandruff shampoo, treat yourself to a deep conditioning treatment, keep dryer sheets on hand for static and if all else fails, buy cute hats!

So ladies! Shed your Uggs and Northfaces, it is time to get glowing and stop being a lackluster Iris Simpkins-lookalike . . . and forget falling for

Rebekah Meiser is a senior studying Magazine Journalism at Ohio University, with a split specialization in Italian and Art History. Like many Italians, she is obnoxiously proud of her heritage and fully embraces it by consuming embarrassing amounts of pasta, bread and cheese. She currently owes a scary amount of money to the government, but continues to masochistically check Net-a-Porter and Urban Outfitters online for beautiful items that she lusts but cannot afford. Rebekah goes to school in the middle of some of the best cornfields in Ohio. Although she finds the location less than ideal, she has become an avid star-gazer thanks to the unpolluted sky. A true lover of fashion, her friends make fun of her for playing dress up as often as she does, but she’s not one to be discouraged. Rebekah also loves to run (read: alternate between jogging and walking), read fashion blogs, bake, and read magazines (of which she owns a forest-worth). She hopes to live and work in New York City after she graduates in the spring.
