“Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” -Mean Girls

Somehow, somewhere over time dressing slutty for Halloween became the norm for young women across college campuses. On October 31st we no longer seem to be saying, “That’s so cool and super creative!” but more like, “Girl, you look hot! Sure you won’t be freezing in that though?”

Of course dressing up as something you’re not is enjoyable and that is definitely the point of Halloween but we’ve gotten away from the originality. When we were younger we used to obsess for weeks over costumes and now we have settled for something that just shows off skin.

Athens is nationally known for our Saturday night Halloween block party. Court Street is closed off and the bars and houses on surrounding streets are packed with twice as many stumbling students than usual. If our campus is going to be filled with guests from all over, why not dress to impress this Halloween?

Let’s just get past some of the most clichéd costumes: Lady Gaga, any ‘sexy’ animal, policewoman, nurse and referee. Yes, I know all these outfits have the “WOW- she’s hot!” factor but after awhile guys end up seeing the same thing and will get bored. Having a unique an imaginative costume can be just as hot as the duck tape Four Loko dress you wore last year. Whether you’re dressing up by yourself, with a group of friends or your boyfriend, there are tons of clever costumes.

Peacock

Don’t go on some website or into a Halloween store and buy a costume. Make it yourself. Buy low-priced peacock feathers from a craft store to put in your hair and attach to a blue or black dress. This is a costume you can have so much fun doing your eye make-up with gorgeous colors.

The Black Swan

Look as scary as Natalie Portman in the movie by putting on a pale complexion with outrageous black eye make-up and hair in a tight bun. Also you get to wear a tiara and tutu, who doesn’t love that? Creative bonus: red colored contacts.

Nicki Minaj

Last year it was Katy Perry as a California Girl and now it’s Nicki’s turn to have many girls dress up like her. There will definitely be a copious amount of Nicki Minaj’s in Athens come the 29th but the woman has so many different looks that no one will be wearing the same thing. Go for bright lipstick, bright hair, bright eyes and bright clothes, basically go over the top. Don’t forget the long fake nails too!

The Seven Deadly Sins

Grab seven of your girlfriends and pick among wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy and gluttony. For each sin, dress it up as how you want to. For example, accessorize for greed with ostentatious jewelry and flashy clothes.

Three Blind Mice

Keeping the Mean Girls motif going, “I’m a mouse, duh!” Draw whiskers on your face, paint your nose pink, grab a cane and wayfarers and you’ve got yourself a costume. Add black pumps to vamp it up a bit.

Grease

Okay, maybe it is a bit of a cliché but I have yet to see Danny Zuko and Sandy Olson on Court Street yet. Wear Sandy’s outfit of the tight leather pants, matching leather jacket, off the shoulder shirt, hair teased and red pumps- sexy yet classy.

Steve Irwin and Crocodile

Be the crocodile and have your man chase after you throughout the night. He’d (or unless you want to be Steve Irwin) look good in khaki shorts and shirt, boots, a cowboy hat and maybe even grab a net. As a crocodile go for green, find a tail and if you want to go all out make a crocodile headpiece. Crocs are not acceptable though. They never are.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse

“I’m a mouse, duh!” Sorry, I love saying that. But why not dress up like these two iconic stars? Find Minnie ears As college students, we’re cheap.

Go to thrift stores throughout Athens like the Goodwill or New-To-You on Stimpson Avenue to find items for any costume you choose to get into Saturday!
