Whether it’s Backdrop or The Post, many students have carved their niche in OU journalism. Kyla Schmalenberger, a junior PR student with a passion for fashion, has found her place in two of the many campus publications.
Kyla declared her PR major freshman year. “I like that the major will give me a lot of career options. I like interacting with people and PR will give me that.”
Since then, she has gone on to work with Thread, Her Campus and has done an internship with COTA, a bus company based in Columbus. Kyla did her internship the summer before her junior year.
Kyla encountered a few challenges at COTA, such as staying on top her daily routine and finding her PR voice. She learned new skills, such as writing press releases which were later published, something she considers her biggest PR accomplishment.
“I enjoyed getting to work downtown in a professional environment,” Kyla said.
Kyla eventually wants to move into a large city like Chicago, New York or San Francisco. She plans on getting a minor in retail merchandising so she can eventually get into the fashion industry. Her love of fashion led her to do PR for Thread, an organization she got involved with freshmen year.
Kyla’s time at Scripps exemplifies a student joining clubs. Her participation in these clubs is an example of getting involved, something that all incoming students should do.
