5 Hidden Secrets at Ohio University That Freshmen Don’t Know About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

Dear incoming freshmen,

While this campus may seem large after your first week of classes, it will continue to shrink each year as you move, meet new people and become more involved. You’ll find new hidden gems on and around campus such as restaurants, study spots, and day-off go-to’s. Here are just 5 hidden gems at Ohio University that you might have not known about, but should definitely check out as soon as you can!

Eldridge Mural

Tucked away behind Seigfred Hall on North Green, students can find the black and white Eldridge Mural painted by OHIO Professor Aethelred Eldridge covering an entire wall. Facing the mural sits risers to get a different perspective of how massive the art piece is. It’s a great place to sit and think, work on assignments, take photos, or hangout with friends to get out of the residence halls.

The Ridges

Formerly the Athens Lunatic Asylum, the grounds are now home to the Kennedy Museum of American Art located in the most known building (pictured below), The Dairy Barn Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center down the road, and hiking trails throughout. While some say it’s haunted, you’ll have to go and find out for yourself. The Ridges also provides a great starting point for a discussion about mental health in today’s society. The University often hosts tours, hikes and campfires here so be on the lookout on the University Calendar for upcoming events.

The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway

If you’re looking for a place to walk, run, or bike outside, the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is the place to go. Situated between the Hocking River and campus, the bikeway is easily accessible for students. Beautiful in all seasons, you definitely won’t want to miss the Cherry Blossoms in the spring along the path.

West Green Smoothies

After a few weeks, you’re likely going to get bored with the same dining hall food every day. The best way to change things up is with a smoothie combo at Smooth Moves in Boyd Market on West Green. Whether you’re on a traditional, flex, or block meal plan, you can use a meal swipe to get a smoothie of your choice, a piece of fruit, and a muffin or protein bar. It’s the perfect little meal when you’re on the run or want something different than the dining hall. It also has longer hours than the dining halls since it’s in the market!

Glidden Elevator

You know you’re officially settled into campus once you discover Glidden’s elevator. Have you been exhausted walking up Jefferson Hill every day for class? If you go into Glidden Hall’s ground floor at the bottom of Jefferson Hill and take the elevator, you’ve just avoided walking up the hill! You’re welcome!
