Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder: And You Are the Beholder

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oglethorpe chapter.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and darling, you are the beholder of the mirror that reflects your beauty. When you woke up this morning did you remember to tell yourself how beautiful you are, or did you forget? Did you remember to compliment yourself and pat yourself on the back for making it through the week? Uh oh… sounds like you haven’t done well at beholding your beauty this week. BUT THAT’S OKAY! Because the week is not yet over, my dear.

*Pause and compliment yourself on your physical appearance*

Ok. Did you do it? If not, I’ll do it for you.. “My skin is glowing today”. (Don’t you skip over those words. Say it like you mean it, please.) Thank you. =

Now, that we’ve crossed that bridge we can get to the nitty gritty part. The part where we remind ourselves that we are what we think. We are metamorphosing beings, constantly changing and growing and becoming our beautiful selves. So, we ought to compliment ourselves for allowing growth to happen. Before we can accept accolades and compliments from others, we should be able to look at ourselves and appreciate our metamorphosis. Tell yourself that you’re proud of overcoming all the changes that you’ve undergone in the process of your metamorphosis. Tell yourself that even in the midst of all the changes that life brings, you still recognize your inner beauty.

*Pause and compliment your strength*

Ok. Did you do it? If not, I’ll do it for you… “My beauty lies within my strength to get up everyday and tackle what life may have in store”.  (Don’t you skip over those words. Say it like you mean it, please.) Thank you.

You deserve to love yourself. And when the going gets tough, you deserve to remind yourself that you are the beholder of your beauty. So, you must nurture your beauty, which sometimes means reminding yourself that who you are is not just ok, but is beautiful just the way it is. If there are things that you would like to improve about yourself, promise me that you won’t allow it to shine brighter than your beauty. Remember, self care is more than just a weekly spa day. So, let yourself know that you are beautiful just the way that you are.

*Pause and compliment your inner beauty*

Ok. Did you do it? If not, I’ll do it for you…”Everyday I look in the mirror, and I am reminded that I am beautiful just the way that I am”. (Don’t you skip over those words. Say it like you mean it, please.) Thank you.

If you followed my directions, you will have complimented yourself at least three times by the end of this article. If you really followed my directions, you may have complimented yourself six times. If you really followed my directions, you may have thought of a list of things that make you beautiful. The more the merrier!

So, if you forgot to wake up this morning and behold your beauty, reading this will give you an opportunity to do so. If you remember nothing else… remember that you are the beholder of your own beauty, and you deserve to remind yourself that you are wonderful just the way that you are.
