For starters, Abbott Elementary is a sitcom about a group of teachers educating the youth of Philadelphia, PA while navigating a major lack of funding. They also deal with a useless but hilarious principal. Disagreements about the veteran teachers’ tried-and-true methods versus the bright-eyed, bushy-tailed new teachers’ innovative ideas are also in the show. Aside from this quick synopsis, here are some reasons why you should be watching Abbott Elementary.

It is a Black-created TV show with a star-studded cast

The main character and creator of the show is Quinta Brunson, who you may recognize from her time as a producer, actress and personality in various Buzzfeed Youtube videos or past acting gigs. Brunson is joined by big names such as Tyler James Williams – who is best known for the show Everybody Hates Chris and the Disney Channel movie Let It Shine – and Lisa Ann Walter, also known as Chessy in the Lindsay Lohan version of The Parent Trap. The show also features Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James and Chris Perfetti, among others.

Most people have had a favorite teacher who made an impact on their life

Brunson named the show after her real-life sixth grade teacher, Joyce Abbott, who is still teaching today. Even if you do not have experience being a teacher, this show is relatable for anyone who has been in a classroom environment. Abbott Elementary provides insight into the humanity of our teacher-heroes while providing comic relief within the staff to whom teaching does not come as naturally. It shows the struggle of teachers who have to make do with an insufficient budget, yet put in extra effort to ensure enrichment for their students. Abbott Elementary is a feel-good show that will have you laughing out loud, while shining light on the real issues of the public education system in the United States, especially in under-privileged  communities.

Lastly, it’s funny with loveable, relatable characters

It gives Parks and Recreation and The Office vibes because the differences between characters in their work environment is comedic. The sitcom has broken records by quadrupling ratings since its debut in Dec. 2021. You can watch Abbott Elementary on Tuesdays at 9pm on ABC, or stream it the next day on Hulu, ABC.com, or on the ABC app.
