Why New Year Goals Are Necessary

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ODU chapter.

Every year when the new year is right around the corner, we all decide (or at least I do) on what we would like to improve on within ourselves. However, if you’re anything like me, I say I’m going to do this and that but I rarely follow through. The older I get the more I realize that making goals and actually accomplishing what I want feels a hell of a lot better than failing. Here are some reasons of why I feel that new year goals are an absolute necessity.

Gives you something to WORK toward.

If you walk into the new year with nothing to hold yourself accountable for, you’ll probably spend another saying how you could’ve, would’ve and should’ve, but didn’t. Doing something when you say you’re going to do it crafts you into someone who keeps their word. Think about it like this, when you work toward something and you finally obtain you feel fulfilled. That overwhelming feeling of being proud of yourself is priceless.

Promotes productivity subconsciously.

Once your mind is made up that you’re going to do something, that’s typically all the fire you need under your ass to get it done. The more you put your time, energy and focus on what you want everything will begin to fall into place for you. Instead of spending your free time doing nothing, you subconsciously become more and more productive in your day to day life. After a while, following through with what you say will become like second nature to you. The people who are the most successful in life are the people who are constantly working toward what they want.

Making goals show your growth.

I believe those who have no goals, have no aspiration to grow as a person. If you’re the same person at the end of the year, there’s a serious problem. Those who don’t wish to grow, don’t wish to succeed. Goals may allow you to reinvent yourself in the way in which you want, but how will you know what you want for yourself if you don’t acknowledge where you are right now? Any sane person would want to continue to evolve into a new and improved version of themselves. Write your goals down on paper, figure out how you plan to get there and continue to put one foot in front of another until you reach each goal.

After reading this article, I hope you’re inspired to do something different and figure out what your goals are. It doesn’t have to be anything big like becoming a vegan, but the way you can successfully fulfill your goals is by starting small and working your way up. A start is a start and it is much better than doing nothing. We decide who we want to be everyday with the choices we make. Bring in your new year with not so much of a new you, but a work in progress. Progress is the key word here. Do what makes you a better version in you, trust me you’ll be so proud of yourself once you see exactly what you’re capable of doing. The sky is not the limit.
