10 Ways to Celebrate Your Birthday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ODU chapter.

1. Go hiking/camping

Not only is this a great way to connect with nature, but also with your friends. Most hiking spots do not have cell phone service so you truly get an in-person experience.

2. Go to an amusement park

If you’re a thrill seeker, there’s nothing better than hitting a theme park. Bonus if your birthday is around the holidays and it’s decorated. There are rides for all types of people: roller coasters, go-karting, arcade games, teacups, and much more.

3. Go see a live performance

Into the fine arts? Go see a concert, play, or musical. Ranging anywhere from a classy symphony, a Broadway show, or that band you’ve loved forever is having a concert, there’s always live theater or entertainment going on.

4. Go to a petting zoo/aquarium

Take some time out of your day with your non-people pals, and your friends. Not only will animals make for a peaceful day, but there’s plenty to learn.

5. Eat at a fancy restaurant

Treat yo self. Go out to that nice restaurant and order that dish you always want but might be just a smidge out of your normal price range. Bonus points if you get to dress up and feel classy on your special night.

6. Go to the beach

Take a day trip to the waves, be it the ocean, a lake, or anywhere that feels beachy. Feel the sun and the water and enjoy a day relaxing outside. Bonus idea: have a bonfire at night to cozy up around.

7. Order food and Netflix

Just because you’re another year older, doesn’t mean you have to leave the house. Food can come to you. Chinese, pizza, or really any local restaurant can be delivered with apps these days. Have your friends watch an old favorite movie or camp out in your living room and binge watch the new season of a TV show.

8. Potluck picnic

Who said birthdays have to be expensive? Pick a park, or your backyard, and have an old-fashioned potluck. Turn on some jams and you’ve got a party. Who could ask for more than good food and good people?

9. Go to a club

Drinks and dancing, need I say more? If you’re looking for an excuse to drag the girls out for a night, you have it. Hit the town in style and claim your special night. Even though you might be another year older, find your inner youth and dance the night away.

10. Board game night

More of a “stay in” person than a “go out” person? Feeling a little competitive? Invite the squad over and pull out the cards and games. Find some mood music and you’ve got a good time ahead of you. You could introduce a new game or play an old favorite.

Hey there,  I'm an outgoing introvert at Old Dominion University. I've lived all across the globe but my hometown is Charlottesville, VA, nestled in the Shanendoah Mountains. Only on an adventure do I feel I can truly connect with the earth. Majoring in Graphic Design, writing for Her Campus, working as a Campus Ambassador, participating as a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma Service Sorority, and being part of the Civic Scholars program, I've got my hands full. When I'm not working or hiking, I'm writing or planning event nights for my friends. I love being outdoors and I spend every moment I can exploring and traveling. I watch a little too much netflix and run an independant literary-arts magazine for emerging authors and artists. Check Sincerely Magazine out and be sure to submit some of your work. I hope you enjoy my rambles because days are simply too short to be bored, Kieran Rundle
