Winter can be one of the most beautiful seasons in New York City: the snow dusting on trees, the magical glow of the bright lights in the wintry air: it almost seems like a Winter Wonderland. Attending NYU and being in NYC, a lot can revolve around being outdoors, which can sometimes feel impossible considering the cold temperatures. Here are some fun activities to try this winter – some which may keep you warmer than others!

Ice Skating – What’s a better winter activity than ice-skating? And believe it or not, this is possible in the city. Too cold to go to Rockefeller Center or Bryant Park? Try the Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers! It’s much closer to campus and it’s indoors. Chelsea Piers is also home to a sports center and spa in addition to studio space where many hit television shows and movies film. Who knows, maybe you’ll even see your favorite celeb at work! And make sure to get a group of friends together too for this fun adventure. Groups of twelve or more receive a discount.

See a Broadway Show– During the winter months; there are not as many tourists, so there are some great promotional deals to take advantage of. For instance, there is a buy-one-get-one free deal going on for many Broadway shows. Check out the complete list here. It may be a bit pricier than Ticket Central, but the seats are definitely better. After the promotion is up, you can always depend on NYU’s Ticket Central for great deals and stay tuned for their spring specials. Now grab a friend, split the ticket price and pick a show!

Check Out a Museum– Feel like doing the whole tourist thing but it’s too icy out for a Circle Line Cruise? Why not go to a museum? There are plenty to choose from in New York, and odds are even if you think you’ve already seen all of the exhibits out there, there will still be plenty more to investigate if you delve deeper. Even though Greenwich Village may be better known for its eclectic scene and inhabitants, there are still great local museums, such as the Forbes Magazine Galleries on 5th Avenue at 12th Street which features Faberge Easter eggs and jewelry, toy boats, miniatures soldiers, presidential manuscripts, and fine art. NYU even has its own on-campus museum called Grey Art Gallery.

Bowling– Whether you’re in the mood for a few rounds of bowling just for fun or a serious competition, head on over to Bowlmor Lanes on University Place and 14th Street. This rocking fifties themed bowling alley features glow-in-the dark lanes, video screens, and even gourmet lane side food and drink service. So as their slogan goes, “get the ball rolling (pun intended!)” and come on over for a few games.

Ski Trip – Try taking a day trip to upstate New York or even travel a bit west to New Jersey to conquer the slopes with some friends. Since it shows no sign of warming up in the near future, why not try to embrace the cold?
