Lana Del Rey “ Born to Die”

Lana Del Rey. How do I even begin on this discussion concerning the one and only Lana Del Rey? A few days ago, I could barely stand this old Hollywood style woman and now, I can’t take her album off of repeat. How has she infiltrated my brain so fast and so stealthily?

At first, I hated her. Like REALLY hated her. But I could never really articulate why I really hated her. Is it because of her corrupted image of being a rich little daddy’s girl, or is it my convoluted views stemming from her awkward SNL performance? Or is it just because I can’t stop staring at her rumored plastic face? Regardless of physical appearance and the role of her father in her quick-risen fame, I couldn’t deny her throaty and sexy vocals, and I got sucked into the fade. After all, does her appearance and affiliations have anything to do with her vocal abilities? I couldn’t find an answer either.

I can’t deny it – I’ve been stricken with Del Rey fever. And what’s even more surprising? I’m completely okay with that. She has captivated not only yours truly, but also the rest of the world. More specifically, 14 different countries. And this is the same girl whose been ripped apart and criticized on almost every single significant musical website out there. Who has the last laugh now? We can’t get enough of her– because we are all secretly obsessed with obsessing about her.

Although the majority of Born to Die is instrumentally anti-climatic and repetitive, it’s her vocals and easy sing-along pop’esque lyrics that just do you in. I think the main reason why she is so refreshing is because of how different her sound is, when comparing it to the electronic/dubstep/house phase we are all currently going through right now. It’s kind of nice to not have to wait for the beat to drop or to have your head spin from the seven different Levels remixes that are coming out every other day.

Simplicity. That is what our music tastes are lacking. Our senses are being overloaded by the overcompressed and processed music that we have forgotten to like the simpler sounds in life.

If you have been living under a rock for the last few days and have no idea who this girl is, watch her vastly improved David Letterman performance here, redeeming herself from her SNL performance. Really, don’t hate on her until you take a peek at her entire album – then if you still don’t like it, to each is his own.

Favorite track off Born to Die:  “Diet Mountain Dew”

I dare you to try to not sing along with her sugary sweet chorus.

One Direction – One Thing

Best boyband since dare I say, N*Sync? But really, they’re cute, super catchy, can sing on key (harmonies for that matter) and dance.
