Tips to Stay Safe During Hurricane Sandy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

Hurricane Sandy is set to brace Manhattan and Her Campus NYU has the best tips for you to stay safe during the storm.

The New York City Office of Emergency Management recommends that all individuals compile emergency supply kits. information is available on their website. The emergency supply kit should include:

  • One gallon of drinking water per person per day – fill or purchase bottles of water ASAP
  • Non-perishable, ready-to-eat food: granola bars, energy bars or canned foods and a can opener
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight –  the use of candles is PROHIBITED in the residence halls; candles present a danger for fire during a storm and should not be used at any time
  • Battery operated AM/FM radio with extra batteries
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Phone that does not rely on electricity
  • Cash (suggested amount is $100)

The Office of Residential Life and Housing Services staff members and Public Safety uniformed officers will be available in the building throughout the period that the storm is forecast to have an impact New York City. Make sure that you have the following phone numbers handy in case of an emergency:

  • Your residence hall public safety post (to contact a public safety officer or page an RA)
  • Your hall Resource Center phone number
  • NYU Emergency Operations Center (for weather related information): (212) 998-2966
  • NYU Public Safety (for emergency assistance): (212) 998-2222

And to insure that none of your belongings get damaged, follow these easy tips:

  • Pull all furniture, including beds, away from the windows
  • Do not leave computers or any electronic devices on the floor, but instead store them in the closet
  • Since the floors can get wet, all items such as shoes, rugs, clothes, bags, suitcases, etc., should be placed on closet shelves or in dresser drawers
  • Make sure your windows are completely closed and latched or locked. Lower your blinds or close your drapes
  • Secure valuables. Lock your room and take your keys when occupants are not in the apartment

Remember, classes will be cancelled and the University will be closed, tomorrow, Monday, October 29.  This includes Bobst, Kimmel, Coles, and the Palladium sports facilities.  All dining halls in residence halls will try to remain open.

Stay tuned to @HerCampusNYU on Twitter for updates regarding classes on Tuesday; which the University will announce midday on Monday.

And most of all, stay safe!
