Her Campus NYU chatted with Sarah Haueisen who hosted She’s the First’s Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off at NYU! Find out what inspired her to be a part of the organization, who she hopes to sponsor with the profits, and how you can get involved in the future!
HC NYU: What made you decide to participate in the She’s The First bake-Off?
SH:I heard about She’s the First through Her Campus NYU, and it struck me for a few reasons. Â First of all, the organization uses the money to advocate for girls in developing nations who want an education. Who doesn’t like that? Â Second of all, She’s the First makes fundraising and volunteering accessible to many people. Â Anyone can bake a cupcake, and even better, anyone can buy a cupcake. Â It really shows how something small like a bake sale can have a big impact.
Â
HC NYU:What did you do to raise awareness for the sale?
SH:We kept it pretty simple: fliers, word of mouth, and Facebook. Â We posted some (in my opinion) very enticing photos of our cupcakes to lure buyers! Next year we hope to add Twitter and campus-wide advertisements.
HC NYU:Are you interested in working with She’s the First in the future?
SH:I’m definitely interested in continuing to work with She’s the First! Right now I’m gauging interest in starting a campus chapter, as well as looking for volunteers for the next bake sale.
Â
HC NYU:How many people did you get to participate in the sale and how much money did you wind up raising?
SH:We actually only had a few volunteers this year, but we raised about $200, which was great for the size of the bake sale.
Â
HC NYU:In what country did you choose to sponsor a girl’s education?
SH:I chose to sponsor girls in Sudan. Â Being one of the poorest countries in the world, many parents in Sudan can’t afford to send their children to school. Â The program works really closely with the village that they sponsor to ensure that they are best serving the needs of the girls in the village.
