Have The Best Spring Break Staycation Ever

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

After seven long weeks of academics, NYU collegiettes are rewarded with a fabulous, week long, spring break vacation. Some students will rush off to Florida for fun in the sun while others head home for time with the family. However, many NYU undergraduates will be spending their spring break right on campus. Staying in the city for spring break does not mean that Collegiettes will have a boring and lackluster vacation. By taking advantage of your free time with a combination of relaxation and exciting activities, students staying on campus will end their spring break refreshed and ready to take on the second half of the semester.

Spring break this year begins with a bang; St. Patrick’s Day. For students looking to explore the cultural aspect of this day, the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade will be held on Saturday, March 16 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The parade runs up Fifth Avenue, past the St. Patrick’s Cathedral, up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The NYC Official Guide at nyc.go tells you to “don your best green gear for the event and watch bagpipers, marching bands and assorted revelers from all over NYC and the world.”

For collegiettes 21 and older, St. Patrick’s Day is a lot more than just parades. NYU is located near an abundance of Irish bars. What better way to celebrate the day than bellying up to an Irish bar and ordering a Guinness. Paddy Reilly’s Music Bar, for example, has a $10 cover for “taps as far as the eye can see” and live music from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, according to their website.

For the sports enthused collegiettes who have missed one too many games due to midterm prep, fear not. NCAA’s March Madness Mayhem begins March 19 and 20 with the first round of games. The second and third rounds will continue throughout the rest of the week.

If basketball isn’t your game, then hop the No. 4 train and head up to Yankee Stadium where they are currently in their pre-season schedule. For $33.50, baseball fans can watch the New York Yankees take on the Minnesota Twins at 7:05 PM on March 21. Peanuts and cracker jacks along with cute clothes, sunshine, adorable athletes and Carvel ice cream all combined make a great Thursday night.

Many of NYU’s collegiettes reside in one of NYU’s 19 undergraduate residence halls. Staff members at the dorms make sure that students who stay during spring break have plenty of things to do during the week. Ashley Rocha, a Resource Center Assistant at University Hall, said that “some RAs are doing small programs like movie showings or snacks and others are taking residents out of the building to Central Park or to a Broadway show.” Be sure to check the bulletin boards for activities sponsored by your dorm.

Speaking of Broadway, within the past two months, many new shows have begun previews or officially opened. Kinky Boots, Matilda, Cinderella, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the list goes on and on. Through organizations such as StudentRush.org, students can find reasonably priced tickets and hopefully be able to see at least one show over spring break.

If all else fails, enjoy having the room free of a few roommates. Pop in a DVD, take a nap, read trashy magazines, and just relax. Whether students want to have an adventurous spring break or a lazy one, staying on campus can be just as fun as escaping the city.
