The 8 Types of Harry Potter Characters You Would Encounter if NYU Was Hogwarts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

NYU is a university that unfortunately isn’t much like Hogwarts at all. But, while we are severely lacking in magic wands and flying broomsticks, there are still some similarities that can be found. We may not have classes in witchcraft and wizardry, but as far as personalities go we pretty much have all of the bases covered.

1. The Harry Potter

The Harry Potter is the underdog at NYU. He is that boy who shows up 20 minutes late to class looking like he woke up 5 minutes ago. Harry personalities start their assignments an hour before they are due but they still somehow have a 4.0 GPA.  He may seem like a mess at the moment, but in the end he’ll end up more successful than us all. Everybody loves a Harry.

2. The Hermione Granger

The Hermione Granger is the know-it-all in your classes. NYU is full of intelligence, but there are some students that are above and beyond the crowd. A Hermione is constantly raising her hand in class. You may get annoyed for a second but then you’ll remember that she is saving you all from the professor noticing that nobody else did the reading. Hermiones can be found in their natural habitat, Bobst, reading up for their next day of learning. Don’t we all wish we could have Hermione’s work ethic?

3. The Luna Lovegood

The Luna Lovegood seems just a little bit out there. She is constantly losing you with her complicated views on the formation of the planet and gender politics. She may be quirky but she definitely knows what she wants and how she’ll get there. Lunas also have the Ravenclaw brains to back it all up. Let’s face it, Luna Lovegood would have killed it in Gallatin.

4. Gilderoy Lockhart

The Gilderoy Lockhart is the guest professor at NYU. He can be anyone from a successful businessman to a celebrity like Pharrell. We have all had those professors at NYU who, like Lockhart, have a syllabus made up mainly by their own success. These professors are great to learn from and generally don’t end up being crazy frauds like Lockhart.

5. The Oliver Wood

The Oliver Wood is that one sporty, hot guy that stands out among the NYU crowd. Whether he’s on the baseball, basketball, or even our all-star quidditch team, he definitely gets a lot attention.

6. The Professor Snape

The Professor Snape is the teacher with the class that you are slightly nervous to walk into. His voice drones on with complicated topics and endless homework assignments that bring you a constant sense of fear. He may have a heart of gold underneath it all, but it certainly is hard to see it while he is disciplining his students and giving out harsh essay grades.

7. The Viktor Krum

The Viktor Krums are the celebrity population at NYU. When you see them walking through the Kimmel Center you might do a double take. Whether the Viktor is a movie star or just has a lot of Instagram followers, you are still slightly intimidated by their presence. Viktors want to be treated just like everybody else and have a normal college experience. Hey, they may even fall for a bookworm Hermione.

8. The Albus Dumbledore

Just like Dumbledore, everyone wants a hug from John Sexton. Even after our current Dumbledore-like leader leaves us this year, our new president, Andrew Hamilton, will grace us with his British accent (so he is basically halfway there on the Harry Potter spectrum).

But in the end, while you may be able to find some similar personalities at NYU, I think we’d all agree that we’d rather be at Hogwarts.

Jamie Kaminer is a member of the NYU class of 2019 studying fashion business and economics in Gallatin.
Madison is a current Gallatin junior pursuing a concentration in Magazine Journalism and a minor in Nutrition. Besides obsessing over french bulldogs, peanut butter, and books, she aspires to be an editor someday. The city serves as her limitless inspiration, and you can most likely spot her in the park either writing away or leafing through magazines. She is currently the campus correspondent for Her Campus NYU and has previously interned and written for Bustle.com, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and NYLON. She believes in freshly baked cookies and never taking herself too seriously. Except when it comes to her career, of course.  "Creativity is intelligence having fun." - Albert Einstein
