5 Ways to Make Your Living Space Ready for Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year. The air is crisp, and right when all the leaves are turning, the foliage makes my walk to class feel like I’m walking inside of a painting. Sometimes I come back to my room and wish it could feel more like autumn inside too. If you want your living space to feel more cozy and full of fall, here are five easy tips that fill up your home with autumn.

Get a mini pumpkin at your local farmers market! While you’re there, see if they have apple cider too! Heating that up in your kitchen (or microwave if you don’t have a kitchen) will make your space more home-y. Tiny pumpkins can go on your window sill, your desk, your dresser, pretty much anywhere. They take up minimal space but have a big impact.

Fill your room with good fall vibes with a playlist that makes you feel cozy and warm– whatever that means to you, you can’t go wrong! I personally suggest soft rock from the 70s, or Carole King’s Tapestry. If that feeling of drinking a nice, warm mug of apple cider while wearing your mom’s old sweater has a sound, it’s her music. Also, it’s Carole King, how could you go wrong. Grab a speaker and play it!

If you can’t find your natural mini pumpkin, find a fabric decorative pumpkin, like this  ultra chic one at Target! Best part is you can store it away and then take it right back out again for next year.

If your dorm allows candles, or if you have your own place, is there really a reason why you shouldn’t buy a fall-scented candle? Couldn’t think of any? Yeah, I didn’t think so. If you don’t already have something like this one, you should run to get it now. I smelt this candle in store the other day, and I didn’t buy it and I think about how much I wish I had it in my life every night before I go to sleep in my non-apple cider scented room. Don’t make my mistakes. Buy the fall scented candle.

Get a decorative wreath, sign, or mat to put outside your door! It’ll cheer up your neighbors and it’ll be a welcoming sight to come home to everyday. Look for something like this mat or this wreath . Or, there’s this sign from Target (can you tell Target is one of my favorite places?) and it’s double sided too!

I believe the point of decorating is to make you feel excited about living in the space you’ve created. Whatever pictures, colors and icons make you happy, put them in your space! No matter what kind of day you’re having, there’s something about coming home to a bright, welcoming space that you’ve assembled for yourself that can turn things around. The fall season is my personal favorite, so filling my space with items that constantly remind me of it fills me with joy, I hope it does the same for you!
