15 Signs That You’re Definitely “Basic”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

Living in New York and going to NYU has definitely made me a more unique individual. Not only have I become more street-smart and tougher, but I have met so many fascinating people that have permanently influenced how I act, dress, and view the world around me. But despite my crazy experiences, I am still in today’s world considered to be extremely “basic.”     Now, let’s get something clear: there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being basic.  For some reason in our current messed-up society, having a “normal” personality and “average” interests is heavily looked down upon. Many peeps automatically assume that “basics” are not adventurous, individualistic, or interesting in any sort of way. Trust me, that couldn’t be further from the truth.    Forget the haters though—just because someone drinks soy lattes, buys their underwear from PINK, and jams to Top 40’s doesn’t mean they are boring. In case you are wondering if you are basic or not, here’s a solid list of 15 dead giveaways. If you identify with at least half, own your basic-ness and let it shine!

1. You like, seriously, cannot wait for the Holiday cups at Starbucks to come back. Or the gingerbread and eggnog lattes. You’ll order them skinny, of course.

2. You think guys like Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum, and Liam Hemsworth are on fiyah. Tan, good jawline, and muscly all over? If men meet these criteria, you automatically think they’re smokin’ okin.

3. You wear leggings and Uggs practically every day. Sometimes you’ll switch it up with dark wash denim with white stitching and chestnut-colored moccasins…but only sometimes.

4. You own at least two EOS lip balm eggs. And one of them is pink. I know, I know, they’re just too darn cute to resist and all the celebrities are using them.

5. You throw back Smirnoff Ice and Mike’s Hard like it’s your day job. When it’s not Trader Joe’s wine nights, of course.

6. You freakin’ love pumpkin spice lattes. And anything pumpkin spice-related, really.

7. You argue about which character you are from SATC with your friends. Not to mention you consider it an insult if they call you a Miranda…because “everyone” knows that Charlotte is the best and Miranda is the betch (even though it’s so not true).

8. You wear Bath and Body Works and/or Victoria Secret body mists most days.Warm Vanilla Sugar, Sensual Amber, Midnight Pomegranate, Twilight Woods, Sexy Temptation, Love Spell, Strawberry and Champagne…sound familiar?

9. You literally [seriously] can’t even. Self-explanatory.

10. You love The Notebook, The Devil Wears Prada, and Dirty Dancing, obviously. Why? Because the love story between Ali and Noah is just too amazing for words, the clothes Anne Hathaway wears are incredible, and you have definitely fantasized about a hot guy picking you up like Patrick Swayze does to Jennifer Grey at the end of the movie.

11. Your style icons are people like Kate Middleton and Lauren Conrad. These women, to you, are the definition of perfect, from their perfect hair to their perfect clothes to their overall perfectness.

12. You own or have owned a Juicy couture track suit. You know, with the little “J” as a zipper. Hella flattering, I know.

13. You prefer Starbucks over any other coffee shop.Even though it’s cheaper to buy coffee pretty much anywhere else, you must get your Starbucks because everything else just doesn’t taste as good in comparison.

14. You believe golden retriever puppies are the secret to happiness in this lifetime. And send your friends memes of them playing or sleeping all the time.

15. Big. White. Knitted. Scarves. And of course you wear these with LOFT sweaters and chestnut brown rider boots…because fall!
