Issues in the Black Community that Must Be Fixed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NSU chapter.

Before I get into the article, let me start by saying Happy Black History Month! We have experienced so many trials and tribulations throughout history, but we have always found a way to concur these obstacles and move forward. Although we still live in a society that looks down on us, that does not stop us from reaching our full potentials, while also proudly embracing our beautiful, glowing melanin. While we continue to strive, there are still some issues within the black community that can be improved upon so that we can help raise each other up even more.

  1. Mental Health Is Serious

One thing I have noticed is that, unfortunately, mental health is not taken very seriously within the black community. I have heard stories about children going to their parents to express how they are feeling, only for their parents to either laugh or tell them that things could be worse and to get over it. According to dramberthornton.com, the number of suicides within the African American community in 2015 was 2,054. About 2,023 were African American males. Black males are expected to be masculine. They are frowned upon if they show signs of “weakness.” Mental health is not just a phase, but it is a mental disease that needs to be paid attention to. In order to decrease the number of suicides and self-harm within our community, we must notice the signs. Some of the signs can be a loss of appetite, exhaustion, a loss of interest in daily hobbies, and gloomy or snappy moods. If you know anyone showing these signs, please check on them. 1. Black-on-Black Crimes

In history, our job in the Black community was to stick together. No matter the circumstances, we always had each other’s backs, but throughout the last few decades, the structure of our community has been crumbling. Not only are we creating gangs that turn us against each other, but we are going to the extents of killing each other. When the Black community commits crimes against one another, this gives the people who look down on us a nice laugh. Our ancestors and important icons throughout history did not fight, just for us to turn around and harm each other. In order for us to prevail within this society, we must unite together and help lift each other up.

  1. Fitness and Health

We as a community love some good ole’ food. There’s nothing like some fresh fried chicken and some super cheesy mac n’ cheese, but mouth-watering foods come with consequences. African Americans have the highest rate of obesity and diabetes out of any other race. This comes from unhealthy foods and sedentary living. When it comes to working out and being conscious of what we eat, sometimes we lack in that area, but it’s okay! Everything has room for improvement! Some things that can help us reduce the rates of diabetes and obesity in our community is to work out at least 3 times a week for at least 10 minutes and eat at least one fruit or vegetable each day. With these small and easy changes, we can become healthier and beat the statistics!

If we can improve in these areas, not only will we see a difference in our community, but we will also see a difference in our future!

Jaida is an outgoing and goofy junior who loves finance so much that she decided to major in it! She has always enjoyed expressing her ideas and loves doing it through writing. While growing up in Richmond, Virginia she developed some hobbies that she still continues to do, such as drawing, playing piano, and reading. Whew, Jaida is an interesting person, right? Well, with this information, I hope this gave you a glimpse of who she is!
