Sangeeta Jheinga – Head of Culture at NUTS

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Meet this week’s Campus Celeb, Nottingham University Television Station’s (NUTS) Head of Culture, Sangeeta Jheinga. Sangeeta is an English student, with a passion for culture, and with NUTS growing and winning awards such as the Best Student TV Broadcaster, her influence and work couldn’t be more important.

Why did you join NUTS in the first place?

I’m really interested in going into the film industry and I thought that it would be beneficial for my future.

What’s your favourite/best experience you’ve had whilst being part of NUTS?

Definitely Week One this year. I produced 2 shows and it was stressful but it was so much fun. There were nights where I had 2 hours sleep but it was worth it. I think being part of the committee this year helped it be my best experience so far of being part of NUTS.

Now you mentioned being part of the committee this year, how did you get the position of the Head of the Culture channel?

Well last year I produced a show called The Screen which came under culture and that obviously gave me some experience. I wanted a culture related position because of my interest in film. During the elections, we had to do 1 minute speeches and it was timed so you literally had to speak just for 1 minute and I was so glad that they voted me in the end. I think that my experience producing a show last year was valuable in getting this role.

Why ‘culture’?

Since I’m studying English, I thought its connection with the arts was the best. There’s the logical mind behind culture. Plus, everyone needs entertainment and culture provides that. It’s evolving every day and in so many different ways.

You said earlier that you wanted to go into the film industry, how do you think your involvement in NUTS will be useful here?

I’ve gained so many skills – like so many! Before I came to NUTS, I hadn’t even used a camera and now I can set up a whole new show. There’s so much technical stuff that I’ve learned – presenting, editing etc. It’s helped with organisation and teamwork is essential.

You’ve also done some work with Impact, the student magazine here at Nottingham University, what do you think is the difference between the two?

Impact is purely written and so the skills I gained from there was just written skills which is similar to my degree. With NUTS, I’ve been able to be on camera and this allowed me to get my personality across – it was a different kind of expression.

Can you give us a little sneak peek of what we can expect from the Culture channel this year?

A whole lot of varied, amazing content. My general vision this year is to be the most varied. I think that culture has the most potential but it hasn’t been explored enough, in fact possibly the least explored area.
