Preview: Nottingham Comedy Festival

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Nottingham’s Comedy Festival kicks off next month, and its eighth year looks set to be its biggest ever! Over two weeks starting the 4th of November, you can see a huge variety of comedy – from stand-up to sketch to improvisation. Whilst the line-up appears pretty male heavy, there are several women creating a huge amount of buzz surrounding their appearance this year. Here at Her Campus, we’ve taken a look at this year’s line-up to show you the best that the festival has to offer this year!

Anna Morris

This show was sold to me on premise alone. Anna Morris plays ‘Britain’s Worst Bride’ Georgina Francis, as the audience is invited to attend her and long-suffering fiancé Simon’s rehearsal wedding. And everything MUST go perfectly. Or else. Edinburgh Guide said “this show is completely perfect” and, with a premise like that, I’m willing to believe them!

Carly Smallman: A Work in Progress and Other Stories About Terrible Sex and Why I Keep Ruining it for Myself

Musical stand-up is always a treat when it’s done right, and Carly Smallman is an incredibly funny song-writer and performer. In 2014 after being harassed by Twitter trolls following her appearance on TV, Smallman turned the experience into the premise for her Edinburgh Fringe show. Funny and fearless, this is a show that promises to deliver.

The Pretty Faces: We’re Just Happy to Be Here

London-based sketch troupe The Pretty Faces are bringing an hour of their finest surrealist observational sketch comedy to the festival this year! They capture everyday life in modern Britain from the small and petty to issues of feminism and homophobia. Inviting us to expect everything from bus delays to dragon warfare, this talented bunch promise something a bit different to your average evening of stand up.

Laura Lexx: Tyrannosaurus Lexx

With 4* reviews from Broadway Baby, Fest Mag, and TV Bomb, Laura Lexx is a comedian on her way up. Currently touring around Britain, she promises an hour that’s a “whirlwind celebration of everything that’s right about slowly turning into your mother and everything that’s wrong with town criers.”

Lauren Pattison

Lauren Pattison was the only female finalist in 2015’s Student Comedy Awards, has just finished supporting Katherine Ryan on her tour, and has been described as “definitely one to watch” (Funny Women). A regular on the Northeast Comedy Circuit, this early-twenties comedian bases most of her material on real-life experience and observational humour – her show is definitely one to catch before she catapults to fame!

Paria Exchange

Nottingham-based favourites Paria Exchange are back for another hour of improvised adventures. Rather than short games, Paria Exchange have perfected storytelling improv, and create an hour-long show based on one question from the audience. With just two actors on stage, the University of Nottingham alumni are guaranteed safe hands if you fancy experiencing some improv unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Juliet Meyers: This Flipping Rescue Dog Has Ruined My Life

A writer on 8 Out of Ten Cats, and described as “smart and very funny” (Independent), Juliet Meyers tells us about the Portuguese rescue dog that has taken over her life. Heart-warming and hilarious, this is a show which promises to delight. Not in the least because apparently the dog will be there.

University Improv Troupe

Fresh from their Edinburgh Fringe run, if you’ve never seen Uni of Nottingham’s own improv troupe in action before, why not start at their Nottingham Comedy Festival gig? With an hour of Whose-Line-Is-It-Anyway-style antics, this fast-paced and enthusiastic group of performers has no script and relies entirely on your suggestions!
