Pieminister for Prime Minister? A Foodie Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Hey foodies! I’m back with another food review and this time I’m venturing out to try to figure out why northerners love their pies so much! On my quest for the perfect pie, I came across Pieminister, located in the heart of Nottingham in the Long Row.

They offer a vast selection of award winning pies and an impressive range of nibbles, baked skillets and a whole heap of great sides to enjoy with them. They also serve a special selection of craft beers, ciders and delicious cocktails to quench your thirst. Interestingly, Pieminister also offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten free pies, meaning everyone can enjoy a meal here.

Starters

On arrival, we decided that we were way too hungry to go without starters, so we ended up ordering three small plates between us #sorrynotsorry. We intended to share as each one cost only £3.50 each, whilst we got the 3 for £10 deal. We settled on the Pigs in Blankets, Halloumi Chips and Nocellara Olives.

The pigs in blankets were made from free range pork chipolatas and bacon dressed in honey, mustard and thyme and they were just as good as they sound. The halloumi chips were deep fried with chilli & lemon which added an interesting touch and went beyond what we expected.

The nocellara olives were also interesting as I just read them as standard olives and ordered, but it turns out they are actually large green Sicilian olives, which are really good and not too salty.  Pieminister also offer Pork Scratchings which claim to be free range pork with apple and ginger sauce. Whilst I am yet to try them, they sound divine and worth a second trip!

Main Courses

Being a student, you start to appreciate restaurants which do deals – anything that saves you a few £££ – and thankfully Pieminister came through! They offer a selection of pie meals to choose form, with me and my other half deciding to both go with the ‘Pie & A Side’. This consists of any classic pie and one side for £7.50 which I figured was quite a bargain.

All classic pies listed on the menu are served with gravy, and if pastry isn’t really your thing, there are a selection of Skillets to choose from which are pastry free and baked in a cast iron pan.

I ordered the ‘MooDog’ which consists of British beef steak, bacon and brewdog 5AM red ale (which is insanely good) and it definitely exceeded all my expectations. My boyfriend ordered the ‘Deer Stalker’ which consisted of a wild British venison, bacon, red wine and green lentils, and he thoroughly enjoyed his pie too (he’s from the North so I consider that to be a tough critic). Both pies also came with a side of mash which was the perfect addition to the meal.

Drinks

Pieminister offer a broad selection of drinks, meaning you’ll be spoilt for choice. This place doesn’t just offer your standard soft drinks, beers and ciders though; they also boast their own blends, milkshakes, cocktails, wine, and even coffee or tea! Although the cocktails are on the pricier side and cost £7.95 each, you can get 2 for 1 cocktails before 7.00pm and after 9.30pm every day.

Since I decided that it was ‘Treat Yo Self Day’, I ordered the Fentimans Cherrytree Cola which arrived in a glass bottle. I’ve never felt so posh in all my life! My boyfriend ordered the Pieminister craft ale which is called the ‘Pieminister Pie PA’ and both drinks were a nice addition to the meal.
