Make-up Dos and Don’ts

Ever had one of those oh no! moments while applying make-up? Well, so has every other girl in the world. Make-up is something of an experiment in trial and error; you have to try different products and techniques until you find the ones which work for you. But whether you’re a make-up newbie or practically have your own beauty blog, everyone can benefit from this basic set of dos and don’ts!

1. Foundation

Do use a full-coverage foundation for special events and nights out and a BB cream or tinted moisturiser for your everyday look.

Do set liquid foundation with some sort of powder. Compact foundation powders are great for getting rid of unwanted shine, while translucent powders leave you with more of a glow.

Don’t apply full-coverage foundation with your fingers! A foundation brush or beauty-blender will give you a much more even coverage, and a dampened beauty-blender provides a natural finish. Save those fingers for the BB cream!

2. Eyeliner

Do sharpen your eyeliner pencil before you use it. Every time.

Do pull your eyelid taut and dot your eyelid in the shape you want your line to take. Then it’s just a case of joining the dots!

Don’t use liquid or gel eyeliner unless you’re already fairly confident with your technique. Mistakes can be hard to remove or rectify once you’ve applied these.

3. Blush

Do choose a shade of blush that has the same undertone as your skin if you’re going for natural look, and one that has the opposite undertone if you want a bolder look.

Do go for powder blushes if you have oily skin as this will leave you with a more matte finish. Otherwise, cream blushes are great for a dewy look.

Don’t apply a huge circle of blush to the apple of your cheeks. Instead, try swiping it up the cheekbones or subtly circling somewhere on the lower part of your cheeks.

4. Lipstick

Do apply lip balm beforehand to smooth over dry patches on your lips and reduce the appearance of crevices.

Do line your lips with a lip-liner that matches your natural lip colour. As with eyeliner, joining the dots will make everything a lot easier!

Do apply the lipstick to the the centre of the lip before moving outwards.

Don’t head out right after lipstick application! Instead, make sure the colour won’t stain your teeth by closing your lips around a finger to get rid of any excess.

5. Covering Up Mistakes

Do use cotton buds to rectify mistakes. Simply swipe away the messy edges of whatever you’ve applied for a clean finish.

Don’t bulldoze over mistakes with a concealer! If your concealer isn’t the exact shade as of your foundation – which it often isn’t – this will leave your skin looking uneven.
