Looking Forward to 2015: Film, TV and Other Wonders

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

If 2015 flies by like 2014 did then you’ll want to make sure you make the most of it! So why not put the revision on hold for 5 minutes and take a quick look at this compilation of things to do/look forward to in the new year – Merry 2015 everyone!

Films:

(There’s a new Stars Wars film out this year, featuring all new lightsabers)

A fair few highlights here this year, including the next instalment of Liam Neeson’s ongoing feud with a bunch kidnappers in Taken 3 (how can it happen 3 times? Come on Liam!) It’s fair to say, however, that most prominence will be placed upon the eagerly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (set 30 years after Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi) as well as the final chapter in the Hunger Games series, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

A few notable mentions are: Minions (everyone’s favourite yellow beings), Avengers: Age of Ultron and Mission: Impossible 5.

(BANANAAAAAAA!!!)

Television:

There are 2 major highlights which have so far been announced – one an old favourite, capturing the attention of everyone who is interested in blood, gore, feuds, battle and romance; the other an attempt to visualise Hilary Mantel’s novel Wolf Hall in a mini-series from the BBC.

The old favourite, of course, is none other than HBO’s Game of Thrones which returns for a 5th series. This will be broadcast on Sky Atlantic in the spring. For those who simply cannot wait for the next chapter of this gruesome yet intriguing series (which somehow manages to maintain the viewer’s interest despite the millions of complicated names) there will be a few sneak-previews coming in February.

Smartwatches: Whilst major technology companies were worried last year as to whether these new pieces of kit would hit it off (with a relatively short battery life and the continuing improvements and successes of smartphones), this year they are hoping they will come to prominence with a bigger focus on health and fitness as key selling points.

Rugby World Cup: For those interested in major sporting events here is one which has been heavily advertised over the recent months and is set to be the biggest Rugby World Cup yet. Here’s hoping that England can reproduce the magic they showed (or rather the magic Jonny Wilkinson showed) in 2003!

200th Anniversary of The Battle of Waterloo: This year sees the celebration and memorialisation of a moment which is significant not only to British history, but also world history. A solidification of British identity as well as the removal of a French-sized obstacle preventing further expansion – an event to be remembered.
