Lagerfeld for Ladies: Feminism at Paris Fashion Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Fashion Month had almost come to an end when King Karl showed a surprisingly new approach to fashion in his SS14/15 Chanel fashion show earlier today. The long-awaited catwalk show of fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld who is known for his controversial views and classic design, did not disappoint. It never disappoints.

After choosing a supermarket as his runway earlier, suggesting his models were housewives taking care of the household, Lagerfeld made a U-turn this year; feminism was this season’s ‘chic’ at the Chanel fashion show. The Grand Palais was redecorated to display a street in Paris and models turned into female protesters.

Instead of carrying the legendary Chanel 2.55 handbags, the excited mob went for large placards as accessory. The signs read ”History is Her Story”, “He For She” and “Ladies First” and made clear, that Karl Lagerfeld supports the empowerment of women and their fight for equality. British model Cara Delevingne and topmodel Gisele Bündchen even demonstrated with megaphones, using their voices to embrace women’s rights.

In the wake of movements like HeForShe, Karl Lagerfeld has used his power to support owmen in a female-dominated industry. Coco Chanel herself freed herself from the social perceptions of women at her time, and we reckon she would have shown support for HeForShe, and the many more feminist movements gathering momentum today.

Models like Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne kept on supporting feminism even after leaving the fashion show. Both were spotted carrying protest signs from the fashion show while leaving the Grand Palais.

The fashion world is aware of feminist revival; nevertheless, in contrast to other industries, the fashion industry still has a long way to go. Karl Lagerfeld’s protest may be the most relevant fashion show this month, but more designers need to follow. Fashion is a very powerful instrument that has been used to suppress women and their bodies for a long time, it is time to finally bring it to good use.

Ladies first, the time has come to show the world what we can do and with King Karl on our side no-one is going to stop us!
