Interview: HCN chats to Harry Potter star Natalia Tena about Molotov Jukebox’s new album.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

We caught up with Harry Potter star Natalia Tena about her band Molotov Jukebox’s new album. Here’s what she had to say!

So, you’re touring for your new album ‘Tropical Gypsy’. How is it going on tour with a group of boys? And are there any bands that have particularly inspired you?

They’re just my best friends really so it’s a lot of jokes and fun. And carrying, actually, loads of things to carry. We all have to do it together though, I don’t get out of it! And umm… I’m sure there have been! Umm, what’s our inspiration…? Oh, Bomba Estéreo and Calypso! Lots of Calypso.

Do you have a particular song which you enjoy performing or are looking forward to performing?

I’m really looking forward to performing, and terrified of, a song called Half Way There because it’s technically very hard, I just don’t know if I’ll be able to pull it off! But no, it’s just an absolute banger… (I think!) And I can’t wait to perform it!

We’ve seen that you aren’t coming to Nottingham on your tour this year, any idea when you next will be?

Umm I have no idea, we’re just starting to look at dates and tours and stuff for next year so we don’t have all the details yet. I’m sure we will be coming back soon though!

Is there a city which you particularly like performing in/ touring around?

Yes, Glasgow is great! I’m really excited to be performing there again, it’s just a great city to go out in and perform to.

On your Wiki page it says you worked as a busker in the London Underground, is this true? And how was it- were the Londoners kind to you?

Yes, when I was about 15. I mean, I’ve busked in other cities as well when I was abroad and had no money. I’ve busked around loads of Europe, I mean England has the most patience for buskers- In Spain they just don’t care. In Spain if you’re busking they just think you’re a crackhead and don’t give you money, whereas in England they definitely give you more time.

So, you’ve done some acting and some singing, how do you find the two compare being on set and performing live?

Well, I’ve done theatre as well, and I think being on stage is quite similar to going into the studio actually, it’s the same adrenaline and focus.

Okay, I’ve just got to ask. Being in Harry Potter, out of all the cast, who would you most like to go on a night out with?

Oh definitely David Thewlis (he played the role of Remus Lupin) and I’ve been on nights out with him before and he’s awesome, he’s fucking hilarious! A very, very, very, very, very funny man- I don’t know how many verys I just said but add more…and double it.

For those Game of Thrones fans out there, have you got any spoilers for us for the next season?

Ha, well I wouldn’t be able to tell you even if I did… but I can make them up? Um, I’m gunna be queen of everything, probably in Episode One. There really is just no rest of the season, it’s just me being a queen and mind controlling the dragons.

So finally, is there anything we can expect from your upcoming album which you’d like to share?

Umm, (speaks to others) what can people expect from our upcoming album, gentlemen? I’m fielding this question! Er, lots of new music to dance to and with feeling as well, please! Just a more developed sound from where we started, so the same thing but more adult, and better. Basically, we’ve been exploring our craft a bit more and trying to find our unique sound.

It sounds like you’ve really enjoyed working on this new album!

I’ve loved it and I’ve fucking hated it, in equal measures. Like I truly mean that, in equal measures. There wasn’t a day between the 2nd of November and this Sunday that I didn’t cry.

Oh, really?

Yes, definitely. I mean, sometimes just for an hour, sometimes more, some days less. Sometimes several times a day, but then other days I just feel so exhilarated like I’m flying just because things have gone so well or rehearsals were great or something. It’s basically just been a fucking emotional journey but that bit’s done now, and now it’s just the other part of it which is trying to get the album out to as many people as possible and just hoping they like it!

It sounds a bit like final year at university then to be honest, just a complete emotional roller-coaster!

Yeah, probably! I never went to uni but I imagine that’s it!

Any final words to add?

Just there’s still a few more spaces on our tour in Manchester, Birmingham, oh and Brighton so if anyone is interested there’s still tickets available! Although, I think there’s only three left in Manchester so they’d better get them quickly!
