It’s that time of the year again when the biggest fashion labels, designers and models all get together in the four most fashionable cities of the world and showcase designs that will influence what we all wear for the next season. This month the catwalks presented the latest designs for Autumn/Winter 2014. I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone since the last fashion weeks of S/S14. Here are some of the highlights from all of the A/W 14 fashion weeks.
Miranda Kerr, Jourdan Dunn, Jessica Alba and Solange Knowles on the Front Row at H&M.
New York Fashion Week
Vera Wang, Victoria Beckham, Donna Karan, Tory Burch, Marc Jacobs.
New York Fashion Week is always my favourite of the fashion weeks and this year it certainly lived up to my expectations. There were so many stylish and impressive shows at the first of the fashion weeks, including Victoria Beckham’s classic black and white designs with an emphasis on ruffles and chains, Vera Wang’s casual black and grey designs, Donna Karan’s glamorous sheer and sparkly collection and Tory Burch’s stylish yet wearable outfits including embellishments, metallic’s and oversized jumpers. Another notable show was Marc Jacobs as this was the only show he was the creative director for this year, after his resignation from Louis Vuitton. The clothes ranged from muted beiges with fur to bold sparkly and embellished futuristic pieces. The show also got attention as Kendall Jenner made her fashion week debut on the catwalk.
London Fashion Week
Burberry Prorsum, Anya Hindmarch, Topshop Unique, Tom Ford, Erdem.
London showcased some of Britain’s finest designers this year. One catwalk that really impressed (as always) was Burberry Prorsum. The clothes has a feminine and floaty feel with lace skirts and floral dresses but the most talked about piece was personalized cashmere scarves that models such as Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn and Suki Waterhouse all wore in the finale. Shows such as Anya Hindmarch’s counter culture show with brand influenced designs also impressed, as well as Topshop Unique’s rebellious unkempt yet wearable catwalk, Tom Ford’s sporty monochrome designs and Erdem’s noble black and white attire influenced by artist Velazquez.
Milan Fashion Week
Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo.
Milan is home to all the Italian power houses such as Prada and Dolce and Gabbana. One of the best shows of MFW was Roberto Cavalli’s 1920’s inspired collection full of pretty embellished flapper style dresses and furs. Other incredible shows included Dolce and Gabbana’s “Enchanted Sicily” collection made up of a mixture of fairytale and Italian influences, Giorgio Armani’s grey and green collection, Salvatore Ferragamo’s black grey and leopard print collection and Prada’s bold prints and bright colours.
Paris Fashion Week
Chanel, Balmain, Sonia Rykiel, Elie Saab, Louis Vuitton
Last but certainly not least was Paris Fashion Week. One of the most iconic shows of all the fashion weeks was Chanel’s runway, with the catwalk modelled after a supermarket lined with custom Chanel grocery products. Other mentionable shows included Balmain’s military style show, Nina Ricci’s feminine and flirty collection, Dior’s bright and bold clothes, Isabel Marant’s edgy casual chic, Sonia Rykiel’s sophisticated looks (mainly because Miranda Kerr walked the runway), Elie Saab’s red carpet ready dresses and deep colours and Saint Laurent’s modern 60’s revival. Another great show was Nicolas Ghesquiere’s first ever show as the Louis Vuitton creative director, the successor to Marc Jacobs. Everyone was impressed by his debut, especially by some of the great handbag designs.
