Dewy Skin: Bella Hadid’s Summer Look

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Supermodel Bella Hadid has been all over the beauty Instagram accounts lately, probably because she’s the face of many Dior Makeup campaigns which have been showering the beauty world with new products. If you saw pictures from the Cannes Film Festival red carpets, you’ll know that the cameras were obsessed with her and her amazingly luminous complexion. Staring at Bella’s Dior adverts, Cannes pictures, and her own stellar Instagram posts, there is one thing she has in all of them; her extremely well hydrated, dewy skin. Her signature look seems to be inspired by French beauty as the main focus is on the skin looking healthy and radiant, and the eyes and lips are natural but defined with a ‘no makeup makeup’ look. It also seems to be inspired by Korean beauty due to how beautifully dewy and almost ‘wet-looking’ the skin is. This makeup is clearly ideal for summer as it’s very light and super glowy. Here are our easy steps on how you can get this Bella Hadid inspired makeup look.

First of all, the most important part of this look is to make sure the skin is well moisturised and treated with the appropriate skincare products that are suited to it. If you can’t seem to find a moisturiser that works for you (the struggle is real!) then why not check out our article ‘Winter Skincare: Moisturisers for Every Skin Type’ as a guide to help you. Lip care is just as important as skincare for this look so, like Bella, use a lip scrub (Lush have some delicious ones that are actually edible…) followed by any lip balm you like to make sure that the lips are well hydrated.

Face

Mac Prep + Prime Fix+ 100ml, £18 or 30ml, £10.

Primer: After the skin and lips are taken care of and completely moisturised, it’s time for the makeup. As this makeup is meant to be very light we suggest using a priming water to prep skin rather than a cream primer which is likely to be heavier. We would recommend Mac’s Prep + Prime Fix+ which is a multipurpose product that will smooth, lock in moisture, and set/refresh makeup all while making the skin look dewy.

Mac Strobe Cream 100ml, £25 or 30ml, £10.

Illuminator: Although this look is intensely glowy, it looks like natural shine rather than looking like fleeky highlighter. So, for this step apply a cream illuminator before applying foundation so that the glow seeps through rather than sits on top of it, to give the illusion of a ‘born with it’ glow. Mac Strobe Cream gives a soft focus effect which is perfect for this. Apply a thin layer all over the skin and apply extra on all the high points of the face (cheekbones, temples, tip of the nose, and Cupid’s bow).

Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation, £13.99 or L’Oreal Cushion Nude Magique Foundation, £14.99. (The L’Oreal foundation in the above image is different and is not available in the UK.)

Foundation: Since we want to keep the makeup as minimal as possible we would suggest using a cushion foundation. Cushion foundations are huge in Korea and the West has finally given in to the hype with many brands coming out with their own. Cushion foundations are great because they give a sheer to medium coverage (if you want you can go ahead and apply some concealer for slightly more coverage) and feels really light so the skin still looks and feels like skin. Try the new cushions by Maybelline or L’Oreal which give a dewy finish adding even more luminosity to this look. If your skin is more towards the oily side you’re probably thinking that this is way too much dew, so at this point you can definitely go ahead and set the foundation with a powder.

Eyes

Urban Decay Naked Palettes retail for around £39.50 each.

Eyeshadow: The eyes are extremely simple so they won’t take very long at all. Simply swish a light wash of a neutral toned shimmery eyeshadow all over the eyelids and the corners of the eyes. Bella tends to go for a champagne or gold colour (which can be found in the naked palettes as well as most other eyeshadow palettes) as these colours open up the eyes and make them appear brighter. Next apply a black or dark brown eyeshadow along the upper and lower lash lines for a bit of definition.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara, £8.99.

Mascara: Finish the eyes off with a good coating of mascara. We would recommend Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Mascara because of its clump free formula and its ability to lengthen and curl every single lash for that doe eyed look.

Lips

NYX Plush Gel Lipstick, £6.50.

Lipstick: The lip look is meant to be balmy (which is why the lip balm is an important step) as opposed to the trendy matte lip look. Lightly apply a hydrating, semi shine, lipstick like the Plush Gel Lipstick by NYX in any colour you like, and sheer it out by blending it so that it looks like a stain or a tinted lip balm but with more of a colour impact.

Finally, spray on some Mac Prep + Prime Fix+ again to set all the dewy glow in place.
