Cheat Sheet: ‘Orange is the New Black’ Season 4

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

The fifth season of ‘Orange is the New Black’ is being released on Friday 9th June, which is just around the corner. Since there’s so many characters on the show, here’s a cheat sheet to quickly catch you up on the last season before you binge! SPOILERS AHEAD!

EPISODE 1: “WORK THAT BODY FOR ME”

This season starts exactly where the last season ended, with the inmates chilling in a lake. In an effort to restore order, Caputo brings in tougher Correctional Officers. Lolly saves Alex from the assassin sent by her former crime boss and through Frieda’s help, they manage to cover it up. Piper is still trying to convince people of her new acquired ‘toughness.’ But, like the general audience, they aren’t buying it.

EPISODE 2: “POWER SUIT”

New celebrity inmate and in-universe famous cook Judy King is pampered during her new arrival. Crystal, Sophia’s wife, continues to ask about the whereabouts of Sophia (who was last left in Max.) and Caputo continues to deal with the difficulties of his position. We also get a flashback into Maria’s life being raised in a gang that her fathered controlled, which brings us to the present where she resolves to form her own gang in Litchfield.

EPISODE 3: “(DON’T) SAY ANYTHING”

Taystee gets a job as Caputo’s office assistant. Maria’s gang is at odds with Piper as she refuses to open her underwear business to their gang, who end up forming their own competing business. Lolly’s paranoia starts to play up around Alex and their recent murder. The budding relationship between Soso and Poussey is threatened by Soso’s prejudices about Poussey’s homelife.

EPISODE 4: “DOCTOR PSYCHO”

Sophia still isn’t released, even after flooding her cell and starts a fire (much to the disappointment of fans everywhere). Red joins the secret murder group much to her displeasure, although they’re still not able to move the body.

EPISODE 5: “WE’LL ALWAYS HAVE BALTIMORE”

Oh, Piper. Only she could somehow accidentally create a white power group. There’s also a shortage of tampon and pads which leads to the women’s health and safety being threatened. While at the same time, Caputo and his girlfriend attend a convention, which again brings up the issue about the shortage of tampons and pads; while the new creepy guards suspect Maritiza of being up to something.

EPISODE 6: “PIECE OF SHIT”

Nicky is back (yay!) but only because Luscheck cashes in on his friendship with Judy King to get her out of Max., but instead it turns into a weird sexual thing. And Taystee, Cindy, Suzanne, and Cindy’s roommate, Alison, has a plan to take down Judy King through selling a photograph to the paparazzi. Maria ends up with extra years added to her sentence because she was framed, and Ruby Rose makes a brief cameo.

EPISODE 7: “IT SOUNDED NICER IN MY HEAD”

Piper is branded – literally (swastika to prove it) – because of the accidental racist white power group. Nicky returns to Litchfield and Lolly’s past is revealed. Morella is struggling to maintain her marriage behind bars and her new friendship with Suzanne.

EPISODE 8: “FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES”

Piper’s tattoo situation is fixed by her prison family, which is led by Red and the former Whispers panties employees are now working in literal construction sites against Caputo’s wishes. Aledia is avoiding Maria’s growing business (which has now turned to drugs) because she’s looking to get her children out of foster care. Crystal is still looking for Sophia, but Caputo’s girlfriend pulls a gun on her when she continues to question.

EPISODE 9: “TURN TABLE TURN”

In this episode, lots of breakdowns occur: first, it’s Red over Nicky’s drug abuse, then it’s Morello over her husband’s possible adultery, and then Pennsatucky, who loses Boo’s friendship over her desire to forgive the guard who raped her. The creepy guard ‘Humps’, who forces her to eat a live mouse, abuses Maritza. On a lighter note, Judy King starts a fake relationship with Cindy to boost her reputation.

EPISODE 10: “BUNNY, SKULL, BUNNY, SKULL”

The theme of protest is heavy in this episode: Blanca begins to start up to the prison because of their mistreatment, and Piper gets the same punishment. Photos of Sophia are being smuggled to Crystal through the help of Sister Ingalls and Caputo, which shows there might be some good left in him too.

EPISODE 11: “PEOPLE PERSONS”

The body that was buried in earlier seasons was found by the construction crew which sends the prison into a lockdown, and the season starts to end with a bang and the inmates start to get twitchy. Lolly confesses to the murder and is sent to Psych, while Healy ultimately checks himself into a mental institution as well. Interrogations starts to begin despite Caputo’s wishes, which pushes Red to exhausts and leads ‘Humps’ to force Suzanne to fight her ex-girlfriend, leading to Maureen being seriously injured.

EPISODE 12: “THE ANIMALS”

In a heartbreaking episode, Sophia finally returns to the prison but isn’t her usual self but is still able to forgive Gloria for her role in sending her to SHU. Boo and Pennsatucky forgive each other as well for their different views on Charlie, and all of the prison cliques are untied against the violent interrogations the prison has been conducting. Then in the most shocking event in the season, Poussey is crushed to death in the middle of the riots.

EPISODE 13: “TOAST CAN’T BE NEVER BE TOAST AGAIN”

Poussey is given a beautifully tragic tribute, where her most eventful night in New York is played next to present day.  Caputo tries to shift the blame of Poussey’s death from CO Bayley (who was the one that crushed her) and onto Poussey herself. Taystee hears this and she ignite a riot in the prison, agreeing to refuse obeying orders and march in one central hallway. Judy King is left out of prison, but not before she is stopped by the riots. The final image of the season lands on Daya pointing a gun at Humps, with all calling for his death.
