Can You Hear That? Nottingham: the Musical Hub

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

It’s the vast range of music styles through the streets of Nottingham. Around every turn is a busker and back allies leading to unknown clubs. So, when looking for any genre of music, look no further than Nottingham. In the evening wander the town centre, where a dusky glow of streetlights and neon signs will lead the way to hidden venues such as, The Pelican Club with its large door and curtain hiding a live jazz band inside. Fancy cocktails and candlelight certainly make this a romantic place to go for a date.

Nottingham has been voted one of the best places for live music in the UK, and in third place beats London in fifth. Hosting 10,000 person arenas to small shows, music can be seen in Nottingham every night of the week. The five main venues include Capital FM Arena, Rock City, Rescue Rooms, The Bodega and Stealth! These places aren’t just clubs, but have presented big name acts. Recently announced are The Stranglers, S Club 7 and King Charles. (So excited to see King Charles!)

If you’re fed up of being a poor students or are possibly looking for a big break, why not join the buskers or venture into auditioning music venues where you may then be spotted. Jake Bugg certainly found his break here and has gone on to be named the “Bob Dylan of the East Midlands”. Bugg returns to his hometown to bring the house down with a huge arena gig.

Whether going to the Royal Concert Hall or summer festivals, Nottingham definitely deserve a high place on surveys for its buzzing music scene. With ringing ears due to the loud, pounding music of student nights, it is now possible to soak up the culture of classical music for only £5 or keep calm in a relaxed setting where music is in the background. There are places for every mood and every eclectic style.

Amidst all this music leaves room for musical placements at organisations such as, the Nottingham Music Hub, Royal Concert Hall and many more opportunities. Being part of the Nottingham Music Student crowd, you can be first in line for many performance and work placement opportunities. Nottingham is so well-known for its broad music scene making it a great place to gain experience. The culture surrounding Nottingham adds to the range of music styles found in the city. Even when turning on the radio so many different local channels can be found that celebrate various cultures.

So be sure to go out and experience all these different ways of consuming music as Nottingham is not only top for its club nights, but for much more.
