Two words: Lion Babe. You might have heard them being played on BBC Radio 1 recently, after Annie Mac made their new single ‘Wonder Woman’ her Hottest Record on Wednesday. They worked with Pharrell Williams on it and have also worked with Childish Gambino and Mark Ronson on other tracks. They released a self-titled EP back in December and are set to release a full album later this year.
So who are Lion Babe? They’re a duo – Lucas Goodman, the producer, and Jillian Hervey, the vocalist (and my new woman crush). They met really briefly at a house party in college, and then hung out together a few times before realising that making music together would be a really good idea. Their music is quite an experimental style of R&B and I haven’t heard anything like it on BBC Radio 1 in a long time. Jillian’s soulful voice paired with Lucas’ stellar producing skills – citing artists such as Kanye West, The Strokes and Timbaland as influences – results in an incredible soundtrack for the last week of term.
I also have to take a moment to appreciate Jillian’s incredible hair and style. There’s no way they’re going to escape unnoticed with Jillian as the face of the band. I mean, just take a look at her MANE:
