8 Characters to Channel This Exam Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Exam session is upon us so that means nearly a month of: unhealthy eating habits, daily trips to the library and (mostly) being sober. It’s one of the worst times that a student has, so we’ve got together a list of the characters you need to channel in order to get through this trying time.

1) Selina Meyer – Veep

Selina Meyer is one of the worst Vice Presidents (no spoilers) to grace any television screens, but there’s no denying that she tries – even if that mostly ends in failure. She reminds us that sometimes you need to lean on your friends in times of trouble, but make sure that they won’t somehow make it even worse.

2) Sun Bak – Sense8

Sun is one of the most resilient, enduring characters I’ve ever watched, but she’s also so quiet. As much as we love to complain about exams and assignments, it’s just as important to actually knuckle down and do them. Channel Sun in these points: have the power to take down anyone that comes near you, but also miss your dog in times of distress.

3) Ben Wyatt – Parks and Recreation

Group study sessions reveal things about your friends – who is annoying at a time of crisis, and who isn’t. Hopefully, you’re the latter. Exam session is the most stressful time and people will talk about anything to get out of actually doing work (guilty). In these moments, be Ben Wyatt; give a look into an imaginary documentary camera and just focus on your own work.

4) Rachel Green – Friends

There’s a lot to be said about Rachel from ‘Friends’. She starts out (as we all do) with no job prospects, no money and barely any grip on the reality of life. All in all, a very relatable character. But she set her sights high and slowly but surely worked towards her goal, and didn’t forget her friends along the way – after all, when all this is over, you’re going to need your friends to party with.

5) Frank Underwood – House of Cards

In exam session, lots of people can be selfish. They don’t return the books you need, hob the library seats and will distract you to talk to you at length about what they haven’t studied. It’s always then to be Frank Underwood: cold, determined and always gets the job done. Be a little ruthless from time to time.

6) The Doctor – Doctor Who

Yes, exams are tough. Yes, they make you question your life choices – but, it’s always good to remind yourself that it is by your own decisions that you’re here. You should love what you’re studying, and should never stop being curious just because it’s easier to stick to what you know. Question things like The Doctor, and you might find out more than you hoped for.

7) Malcolm Tucker – The Thick of It

Of course, sometimes the stress levels need a release. It’s always relaxing to have a little rant – provided that it’s not at somebody, but rather with them. It’s when we’re most frustrated that we’re challenged. If we have to release a little steam, we should do it with the most creative insults – and that’s why it’s always good to have vocabulary as colorful as Malcolm Tucker.

8) Cristina Yang – Grey’s Anatomy

Sometimes, all you need is motivation to actually continue to study. It’s difficult but in times like these, thing of one of the most competitive characters in the last decade, Cristina Yang. Push yourself higher, study a bit longer, and in the future, you will be rewarded.

Happy revising!
