6 Tips To Make Your Life As A Fresher Slightly Easier

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Welcome to the big old world of University living. You’re a fresher – a newbie on the block – but don’t fear, we’ve all been there! Here are a few helpful tips on how to ease through your way into this great adventure!

1. Never complain to someone who isn’t a fresher how difficult your degree is/ how heavy your workload is.

What seems to be a minor complaint will be taken as a great offence. It will probably be followed by expressions such as “first year doesn’t even count” and “wait until you get to second year.” They get really annoyed if you say you’re having a hard time!

2. Don’t get too emotionally involved with a flatmate.

You’re going to be living around the people in your flat or halls for the whole year and there’s nothing worse than that awkward atmosphere after a two-week fling ends in disaster. It’s probably just worth avoiding all together.

3. Don’t overwork and overstress yourself.

Most degrees only need a 40% average mark in first year to pass- and most are worth 0% towards your final degree! Don’t lock yourself away and miss out on great nights with people that will probably become some of your best friends. Go to lectures and give yourself a few days revision, you’ll probably do much better than you expected anyway.

4. Get rid of your parents ASAP.

As much as moving away from home is an emotional experience for all involved, the sooner you get involved in uni life and get talking to people, the quicker you’ll forget you even moved out. Just make sure you don’t refer to uni as ‘home’ in front of your parents unless you want an extra lecture!

5. Up your exercise regime.

It’s very well known that lots of people that start university put on some weight in their first year, known as the Freshman 15. With the offer of a different club every night and tempting food all over campus, it’s probably best to find a preferred drink with a low calorie content and to join a sports team or get a gym membership. With fresher’s flu spreading like wildfire your best option is to stay as healthy as you can!

6. Don’t panic and enjoy!

There are thousands of people at uni and you’re guaranteed to make lots of friends with similar interests, but it won’t happen in a blink of an eye. Don’t panic if you don’t discover your best friend and soulmate on the first day! Join societies that interest you and put yourself out there!

Hopefully these tips get you off to a good start, but most of all you have to remember that university is a new experience for everyone when they start. Get involved and have as much fun as possible – you’re starting the greatest three years of your life before you have to step into the real world! Make the most of it!
