The Christmas break is so so close!! After a long and hard term this autumn, we all deserve a good break to unwind and come back stronger next term. For the people who are visiting their families and want to have a movie night, avid movie watchers, or those who are simply wanting to get into the Christmas spirit, grab your hot cocoa and put on your ugly Christmas sweaters to binge watch these 6 movies:
The Holiday
A rom-com is always the way to go during holidays! Starring Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black, this movie follows two women who swap their homes in different countries of residence and end up falling for the men they meet there. The fact that this rom com is set during the holiday period makes it a very fitting watch during the Christmas break.
Home Alone
To those who have never heard of this movie, the title is self-explanatory. On their way to spend the holidays in Paris, a family leaves their eight-year-old son home alone where he spends his Christmas Eve going head-to-head with a pair of burglars. This classic can be enjoyed by the whole family as it is PG, just be ready for a lot of laughs!
A Christmas Carol
This rather chilling adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel set in London revolves around Ebenezer Scrooge, a grumpy businessman who is visited by the ghost of his late business partner who warns him of an eerie fate if he doesn’t change his evil ways. Scrooge is tested over the period of three nights by the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Hang on to your blankets and keep the popcorn on hand because this is going to be an experience like you’ve never had!
Frozen
Don’t be fooled with this one. It may be made for the kids, but the adults can enjoy it too! This Disney movie follows two sisters, Anna and Elsa, who are navigating royalty, sisterhood, secrets, and magical powers after losing their parents. More specifically, after her coronation, Elsa runs away in fear of exposing her powers, and the movie takes us with Anna and a few of the friends she’s made along the way in search for her. Nothing says Christmas better than catchy songs and the domination of snow.
Little Women
Whether it’s the 1994 movie starring Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon or the 2019 remake starring Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, and Saoirse Ronan, Little Women is one of the cosiest watches during the holidays. Adapted from the novel by Louisa May Alcott and set after the American Civil War in the 19th century, this movie follows the story of four sisters trying to survive poverty while encountering different romantic and personal endeavours. The warmth of these sisters’ bond between one another and the aesthetically pleasing costumes and mise en scene make this movie a heartwarming watch – which is just perfect for the winter holidays.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
This green creature has become a fundamental part of Christmas, so watching a movie about him will put you in a Christmas mood without fail. Taking into account his hatred for Christmas, the Grinch is appointed as the Holiday Cheermeister for the town of Whoville, thus enraging Augustus Maywho, an old classmate, the new mayor of the town, and the reason why the Grinch hates Christmas. Will the Grinch be able to enjoy the holidays and get his job done well, or will Maywho give him a hard time?
Watching movies is always a good way to kick back and relax, especially during the holidays. Whether it’s family bonding time or cosy entertainment when you are abroad, movies always have a way of healing hearts and brightening days.
Happy holidays!
