6 Crazy American Food Creations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

When food trends sweep the social media platforms by storm, it’s highly likely they originated in America. We’re taking a look at some of the strangest ones brought to our phone screens from across the pond:

Mac and Cheetos

Sold at Burger King , these are essentially your standard UK Wotsits stuffed with mac and cheese. The noodles get fried before receiving a generous orange dusting, and you can get a handy portable box of five for $2.50.

Root Beer Float Oreos

There were many flavours that could have been featured here, but this one seemed the most alien to us Brits. A root beer float entails a suspicious sweet beverage that’s been likened to Calpol being poured over vanilla ice cream. Somehow Oreo put that combination in a cookie for a summer special edition! Other wacky offerings include Watermelon and Swedish Fish.

Deep Fried Butter

America love to fry their food, and their “fall fairgrounds” aren’t complete without such “delicacies”. We accepted the fried oreos, and we even have our own fried mars bar in Scotland, but this just seems like a heart attack waiting to happen.

Breakfast Lasagna

Found in Walt Disney World at their Crystal Palace buffet where guests can meet Winnie the Pooh and friends, this dish combines waffles, pancakes, pound cake, custard and pastry cream. It doesn’t get any points for presentation, but the sickly sweet combo is guaranteed to give you the sugar rush you need to get through a busy day at the parks.

Play Dough Ice Cream

Many kids try to stick play dough in their mouths. However Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream Parlor turned this into an actual thing with their florescent coloured scoops. We’re still not sure what exactly this is meant to taste like, but a glance at the ingredients list seems to suggest its essentially dyed vanilla with cookie dough chunks. However the unusual name always draws customers in from far and wide searching for the latest foodie trend.

Cronuts

We had to end the list with arguably America’s greatest wacky food creation which has been gladly accepted into our cold British hearts. Combining the croissant and donut was New York City pastry chef Dominique Ansel’s idea, of Dominique Ansel Bakery, and copies can now be found at bakeries across the globe.
