5 Must-have beauty and makeup items to help you through exam season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

1)      At the top of my list, and probably the most important product, is a fab heavy-duty under eye concealer to keep those bags at bay. It’s inevitable that all-nighters will be pulled in the next few weeks – sometimes it’s the only way to get that dreaded piece of coursework or exam prep finished – so f you do wake up looking like a panda, zombie, or a zombie-panda, you’re going to need a good concealer. Try Laura Mercier High Coverage Under Eye Concealer, perhaps in a shade lighter than you would usually use to amp up the brightening factor.

2)      Continuing on the theme of zombie-eyes, if your waterline is looking a bit red from lack of sleep apply a nude eyeliner such as Rimmel Scandal Eyes Waterproof Kohl Liner in Nude or MAC’s Chromagraphic pencil in NC15/NW20 to the waterline and also the inner corner of the eye to brighten the whole area. This should help you look more awake and a bit less like exams are making you die inside.

3)      Dry shampoo. Because let’s face it – some days, washing that mane is way too much effort. A good dry shampoo can keep you going an extra day (or even two – life is a struggle right now, OK?). My favourite will always by Batiste, particularly the tropical scented one. I have very dark, almost black hair and I find any of the other scents leave a more powdery residue which makes me look a bit grey, which is not good! Make sure it’s well distributed and rubbed in, and you should be fine. Alternatively, this by Pantene smells amazing, and leaves no residue whatsoever.

4)      Pack a good hydrating lip balm in your bag to carry with you at all times. Dry and chapped lips can happen a lot through stress and concentration-induced-lip-chewing, so look after your lips with something luxurious like Burt’s Bees Refreshing Lip Balm in Grapefruit or Lush’s Lip Service. Slicking a layer of something rich and delicious-smelling on your pout is a perfect little pick-me-up throughout the day.

5)      Keep nails short and painted with a fun nail polish colour. If you’re anything like me, maintaining long nails at exam-time is pretty much impossible. Holding your pen to write up those notes is definitely more tricky with claws, plus the only time I’m ever prone to nail-biting (ew, yes, I know!) is in the middle of an exam when the panic hits and I find myself having a chew to calm my nerves. Keep them trimmed short and round to make sure this doesn’t happen to you! Plus, if you can find a spare ten minutes to paint them a fun Spring-y colour like mint green, bright coral or strawberry daiquiri pink, this should help to keep you feeling perky and looking forward to summer (and freedom)! Barry M do an amazing range of colours, and most are less than £3!

Hello there! My name is Jess. I am a third year Human Geneticist with a bit of a make up addiction. I am really excited to be on the Her Campus team this year and will be writing beauty blog posts fortnightly this year. Expect plenty of fuss about finding the perfect red lip and perhaps discover which pricey skincare products are really worth your student loan.
Sam is a Third Year at the University of Nottingham, England and Campus Correspondent for HC Nottingham. She is studying English and would love a career in journalism or marketing (to name two very broad industries). But for now, her favourite pastimes include nightclubs, ebay, cooking, reading, hunting down new music, watching thought-provoking films, chatting, and attempting to find a sport/workout regime that she enjoys!
